Router stats would help analysing what is wrong, and there obviously is something amiss.
Post them up if you want some help Mel's Notes: Dg834gt-1skuk

I have tried TCP this morning, this is my results following optimisation.

      Re: Dreadful broadband !

Your stats seem to show you ar capped or DLM is still running on your line. Your attenuation should support around 6Mb with a good line and no noise.

I suspect you have quite a lot of noise on your line. Do you have a master socket with the lower half that can be removed? If so then remove it and plug the router directly into the socket behind, this is the test socket, get the stats from here and post them again, this should remove any internal wiring issues.

One more thing to check, when the faceplate is removed, check any other phone socket are dead, they should be.

Do you have all phone sockets filtered, including any you use for Sky or alarms?

      Re: Dreadful broadband !

In addition to Smithy's comments, go to BT Performance Tester enter your phone number then your ADSL username. This will do an official BT speed test and show your present profile. Your ADSL username is <the LAN MAC number of your router, no colons, followed by> @skydsl You can also obtain this from the router by using one of the utilities available on the forum.

If you have just connected you will be in the BT training period which lasts fro 7-10 days. If you have been connected for more than a couple of weeks, your line will probably have to be reconfigured.

I have just done the above speedtest using the master socket, markedly better, I cant beleive it ! does this mean there is an error somewhere between the master socket and my pc ?

BT installed the cabling for this.

      Re: Dreadful broadband !

It could be partly to blame, but probably the main reason is that in moving your router you have forced it to resync with the exchange, giving you a higher sync. If you take your stats from the Test socket and do the performance test above then post the results it will give a better idea.

      Re: Dreadful broadband !

To make matters worse , I have done the speed tests on a vista laptop, first test, 3mb in master socket, 2nd test using the socket that the pc is plugged into 10.3mb, and thirdly using wifi 13.3mb !

This surely means that my pc is to blame

What the hell is wrong with it ?
