Major outage in parts of London

For more than a day now parts of London have had no Internet.

It has now been confirmed that this is a direct result of an attempt to steal the cable.

Sky Help & Support Latest News
Sky Broadband & Talk outage in South London | 12 December 2013 Update: 12 December, 14.30: Openreach engineers have been working to repair the network as a matter of urgency, and have now restored service in Dartford, Mitcham, Battersea, Wimbledon, Hampstead and Beulah Hill.
There is currently a Sky Broadband and Sky Talk outage in parts of London, after thieves attempted to steal copper and damaged fibres in the process that form part of Openreach’s network at a site in West London (Great West Road) on 10 December. We understand up to 37,000 Sky customers have been affected in the following areas:
      Stamford Hill
      Dartford
      Ewell
      Mitcham
      Battersea
      Chiswick
      Wimbledon
      Hampstead
      Beulah Hill

We will keep you informed with any updates as soon as we receive them and are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Other than Easynet, I do not know which other ISPs have been directly affected by these events, but I understand that the damage is quite severe.

Sky will keep customers updated through their website and twitter feed.

Phone line was apparently broken, didn't notice because we hardly use the landline, but fibre was ok the whole time. Routed differently?

I don't know the specifics of the damage, but from what I understand it wasn't a completely clean cut.

As for re-routing the traffic, this apparently has been done for some of another ISP's traffic, but hasn't been done for all the traffic.

Yes, if the copper cable was broken between the old cabinet and the exchange, it would not effect the Fibre which is routed through the new fibre cabinet.
