      Extremely slow broadband

I have been getting very slow speeds from my internet connection. I ran a speed test this morning and got 0.44 & 0.47 Mbps. I contacted Sky and they supposidely did some tests and they told me I should be getting 4.8, I ran speed test again and amazingly it was just over 4.
This afternoon the speed dropped again to 0.29 so I contacted them again. They did there tests again and it went up but again after a short while it dropped.
When I contacted them again they asked me to change the channel in the sky hub, I again told them that the slow speeds were on wired connections but they said to change the channel and monitor the speeds for a few days.
The speed again dropped and they asked my to change the Ethernet cables, but I said there were no spare cables. They then asked if I had thought of upgrading and I said that fibre was not yet available in my area.
They left it with me to keep on monitoring the sppeds and get back to them.

Does any have any suggestions? .

      Hello johnp,

Speedtests can be very unreliable. There are a number of reasons why they vary. The most reliable figures are your router's connection stats. Could you post these for us?

How To Get Your Sky Hub SR101 Router Statistics

In your response could you let us know how you are doing the speedtests and which site you are using? For example are you doing this on a laptop over WiFi to the speedtest.net site?

      Re: Extremely slow broadband

Thank you for coming back to us on this.

Your connection stats appear to be fine. They suggest that you are some distance from the exchange, but based upon the Line Attenuation you're getting the right connection speed.

Of course there might be ways to improve this. We could look at this later. For the moment I'm concerned about why your test results are dropping so much.

One of the things with the speedtest.net or Ookla site is that there are multiple servers. It's also hugely popular and some servers literally get hammered. Some of the servers don't have the capacity to handle the traffic they get, some just can't handle Fibre, which you haven't got.

Could I ask you to look at your test history to see where the servers were that gave you the results please? Ideally the site would provide information on the specific server, but it only provides the location.

Once you've got this information, could you test again and ensure that you select one of the servers in London. Structured Communications is a good one for Fibre testers. These servers should provide more consistent results. From experience don't touch the Vodafone server in Newbury. This is geared up for their mobile network and frankly is a waste of time for anyone else IMHO.

      Re: Extremely slow broadband

The speed test also depends on where you are. On default Speedtest, net locates me down on the south coast near Dover and uses Maidstone. That's only about 500 miles from my actual location. Try using the server nearest your actual location, that should be good enough for ADSL.

These are the results we have had today on speedtest.net , taken at various times, selecting different servers. The computer that we have taken the results on is connected via cable.

Have you run any anti-malware software recently? I would hope that you do have an anti-virus program running. Could you check that the database is up to date and I would ask you to scan your computer with this too.

I'm wondering if there is something slowing your computer down, rather than the connection.

      Re: Extremely slow broadband

Having two network cards active at the same time can skew the results quite a lot.
I make sure that I disable my ethernet connection whilst checking the wireless access.
It should not affect the router stats though.
