Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
Every now and then when I type in a url in the address bar in firefox, ie or chrome, I get taken to a what I think is a random site.
I've looked into how firefox deals with url entries and they pass that on to the Sky DNS servers to see if the entry can be looked up and an address given back for the site which can then be displayed on my browser.
If the url cannot be translated, firefox will then use your default search engine to display search results.
This seems a logical thing to do.
There are however a few names that when I enter into the url, the DNS servers bring back what I called advertisement pages.
For example:
type in the address bar in firefox, ie or chrome:
hartlepoolmail.com
it takes me to smartmoneytime and a bogus £500 Voucher to Tesco display!
or it can take me to:
http://zc.zeroredirect2.com/zcredire...Detected=false
which I have firefox to block as a redirect!
Sometimes the DNS servers takes me to:
hartlepoolmail.com
which is a normal page and what should really be expected from a DNS lookup.
I have tried this on 2 laptops and a pc and the results are the same.
I asked some friends who are with BT broadband and the same thing happened to them, they get the same advertisement pages.
SO WHO IS TO BLAME?
I have checked my pc and laptops for virus, malaware etc, nothing is found.
It does appear that the url is passed to the sky servers who then try and look up the name, but somewhere down the line these redirects or "invalid" pages are brought back to my browser.
Can anyone try the above and see what they get?
As it is happening on Sky broadband and at least one other, BT broadband, is there something that has hijacked the servers at BT or Sky and are bringing back the invalid wrong guesses at what I am trying to browse?
If I type in just hartlepoolmail, I get the search results which is correct, but if I add the .com to the entry, that is when it goes wrong.
Anyone help?
Thanks in advance.....

It sends me to "http://m.prizes-4u.com/lp/uk/survey/03/win_UK.php?s=250443471" and I'm using Opendns.

Re: Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
http://www.hartlepoolmail.com takes me to http://ww2.hartlepoolmail.com/ which is just a page of 'sponsored listings for goods and services related to hartlepoolmail.com'
I'm using google dns.

I am getting the same redirects with OpenDNS. I would not be surprised if someone has hacked the paper's site. Maybe you should contact the site admin and advise them of what is happening. Contact details Hartlepool Mail

Re: Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
If I use Safari or Photon on the ipad with Sky's default DNS settings I get http://smartmoneytime.com/uk3/ukmobi...hp?a=423555594
If I switch on flash player mode within Photon which routes through an American server so I can use flash I get https://shopping.yahoo.com/search _ylc=X3oDMTN2cXB1OWQ0BF9TAzc4NDcxNjg1OQRrA3Bvb2xzB HNlbV9hY3QDOTg4MDU4ODIzMQRzZW1fYWRnAzUzOTkzODQEc2V tX2NtcAMxNDk2MDIEc2VtX2RhdAMEc2VtX2t3aWQDMTg3NjU1M zkwBHNlbV9wdG5yA0dvb2dsZQRzZW1fdmRyA2FrcWE-?p=pools&sem=AdMarketPlace&clickid=3604866636
If I then change the DNS settings to googles DNS and use photon with flash enabled I still get http://smartmoneytime.com/uk3/ukmobi...hp?a=423555594
If I still use googles DNS settings and the use Safari I then get http://ww2.hartlepoolmail.com
Seems a little all over the place to be honest.
I also just tried safari again still using googles DNS settings and this time got the redirect to http://smartmoneytime.com/uk3/ukmobi...hp?a=423555594

Re: Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
What content are you looking for? If it is for the website of a UK local newspaper shouldn't you be directing your browser to Hartlepool Mail.

Re: Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
A quick Whois check shows that the paper owns (and uses) the co.uk address and not the com address.

Re: Is the Sky DSN servers to blame?
So that's you (BroadbandKing) basically slapped for being stoopid!
It has happened on other names I have entered, just thought it was a bit strange that you get these ads which no doubt are trying to get you to disclose your private information!
I would have thought that you would have gotten the following when typing in an invalid url:
Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at "www.sgshgsjh.com".
Which is what happens if you put in "sgshgsjh.com" into the address bar.
Seems as if certain domain names have been hijacked!
