Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
Hi.
My Sky Broadband Router stats show as roughly 3500kbps yet when I do a online test the download speed is around 1.45 mbs - 240mbs depending who I try.
Which one is more accurate the stats direct from router or online?
Thanks in Advance.

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
on router page "click show statistics " copy this on post your speed results from 3500kbps should be 2.8mb approx also which are you testing with wireless or ethernet

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
So then thats why the neighbours thought my internet was so much faster (FAST..ERRR! thats a joke in its self!) than theirs I was quoting speed as 3500 obviously (now) they were using the mb speed! Doh!
Connected wired via homeplug.

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
looks like upstream poor and you may be picking up errors , which would slow you down , look for noise on telephone line and also just connect router directly in test socket which is bottom part of main socket (this will bt socket with split faceplate bottom part unscrews)
post router stats from that point , possible lost in speed from homeplug possible as well but check line first . sorry should have made clearer your line speed 3500kbps in approx 3.4 mb but there is small overheads which then give browsing speed of 3 to 2.8 mb

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
Tenar.
Thanks for the reply.
I wasnt trying to get the speed any faster, although that'd be great. The whole estate where I live have very slow broadband.
Ive got a filtered faceplate I fitted (which did increse speeds slightly) and tests from socket or home plug hardly alter. Ive done all the tests I think possible, I just cant get quicker broadband.
I was just curious to why the stats varied from the ones I directly got from router and the online tests and which is the most accurate.
So does 1000kbps = 1mb (would I be correct that is a rough guide?)

1024 kbps = 1mb

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
That's not quite correct. Data transmission rates are measured in decimals so 1000kbps = 1mbps. Note the small b which indicates bits.
A large B indicates Bytes which is a measure of quantity. In that case 1MBps would indeed = 1024KBps.
bits = the speed of transfer
bytes = the amount being transferred.
The kilobytes per second you are downloading can be got by dividing the kbps by 8. eg, @3200kbps your transfer rate would be 400KBps.

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
So after all that, what is most accurate...
Readings from Router or readings from a online checker?

Re: Sky Router Stats show higher than online speed tests.
The figures shown in the router stats are sync speeds.
That's the speed at which you connect to (or synchronise with) your local exchange.
The download speeds you actually experience will always be less, due to overheads.
These figures are generally known as 'throughput speeds' & will typically be around 10%-20% lower than sync speeds.
Online checkers measure throughput speeds.
They're also notoriously inaccurate depending on which one you're using.
