Should I expect more speed?
Hi,
I've recently switched to Sky and about 7 days in to the training period. I was on a 12Mb package previously (capped at 12Mb) and I always connected at this, with a line attenuation of 27.5db and noise margin of around 6.5db. My previous ISP said I should get 16Mb+ if I moved to their up to 24Mb package.
Since the switch to Sky, my connection speed has gone from 4Mb to 10Mb, then to 12281Kb. Whilst I can see the WAN is re-syncing each night and noise margin has dropped from 7.5db to 3.4db, there is no change to the connection speed for the last 4 nights. The downstream line attenuation is 26.5db, so I would have expected to be getting a connection of about 16000Kb.
Do you think the DLM will increase the line speed or is this it?
Thanks.

Re: Should I expect more speed?
ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.
It looks like you have room for more speed.
What are your stats from the test socket?
How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket~ Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ~

Re: Should I expect more speed?
Hi,
Very little difference:
Connection: 12285Kbps down, 1098 up
Line attenuation: 26.0 down, 14.1 up
Noise margin: 3.4 down, 7.3 up
Is it worth keeping the router plugged in to the test socket overnight?
Also, I've noticed the bell wire is attached. Whilst there doesn't seem to be much difference between the test socket and the extension socket (internal wired, not plug in cable), is it worth removing this?
Thanks.

Re: Should I expect more speed?
post both set of stats from test socket and from extension
at moment with the readings line will not increase
i would also check for any noise on telephone as well

Re: Should I expect more speed?
Yes, definitely remove the ring wire.
Tutorial here. Sky User - How to remove the ring wire from your master socket
Opinion seems divided as whether or not to disconnect the wire both ends (master and ext) Personally I would do both, just takes a few seconds

Re: Should I expect more speed?
OK. The ring wire is out and there's no difference in the stats I posted, so at least I know there's nothing in the house

Re: Should I expect more speed?
The training period has finished this morning, resulting in my line speed being fixed at 12.3Mbps download and 1.3Mbps upload. The connection speed is still at 12285Kbps and hasn't changed in days. I've not seen Sky trying to connect at a higher speed, then bring it back down again.
Given my line attenuation, I still think the line should be capable of more. Is it worth giving Sky a call? Is there anything they can do to check if the line is capable to taking a higher connection speed?
Any advice is appreciated!

Re: Should I expect more speed?
Its always worth giving them a call. I am not certain but it looks like DLM attempted to increase your speed when it dropped your margin down. The fact that you did not see an increase in speed could mean that your line was just not capable and produced too many errors. It then stabilised it at its present speed, with a higher margin. This is suposition on my part as I don't know sufficient about the inner workings of DLM to be sure. I don't think many outside the team that designed it do.
In theory your attenuation should give you a better speed, so give Sky a call and see what they can do.
If you have a Test socket, plug the router in there when you call. This applies especially if you have extension wiring fixed to the faceplate of the master socket. If you don't have a Test socket, unplug everything from the phone circuit except the router and phone you are using to call.

Re: Should I expect more speed?
I gave Sky a call and they were very helpful. They've manually reconfigured my line to start at 15Mbps and kicked off DLM again, so I'll keep an eye on my stats.
I get negligible difference between the test socket and the extension socket. Ring wire in removed in the master so not sure if changing the router location will give any advantage?
