New to sky broadband
Hi all
I've moved for BT broadband today. My line attenuation has increased from 38.8db on BT to 42db on Sky. I understand this will impact on my line speed.
Could this stat improve during the DLM?
Many thanks
Graeme

Re: New to sky broadband
Could you post your full connection stats please?
How to get your Sky Router statistics
It is also worth noting that your exchange has Fibre installed. How long ago did you last check the figures on your BT connection? I mention this as several members have complained that their speeds dropped when Fibre was installed locally.

Re: New to sky broadband
My sky details are:
With BT my details were (based from Sunday):ADSL Link Downstream Upstream Connection Speed 4092 kbps 606 kbps Line Attenuation 42.0 dB 24.1 dB Noise Margin 6.1 dB 16.3 dB
Downstream: 9.618 Mbps Upstream: 1.106 Mbps Noise margin (Down/Up): 2.7 dB / 6.1 dB Line attenuation (Down/Up): 38.8 dB / 23.3 dB
With regards to Fibre, this is installed at my main exchange, however, I am unable to get fibre at my address. I understand fibre has been installed for a number of months.
Many thanks
Graeme

Re: New to sky broadband
Whilst it doesn't look promising on the face of it, there is scope for a reasonable connection speed out of this.
The Noise Margin on the upstream side is quite high. What DLM may do is to adjust thing so that as the speeds rise, it takes some of the upstream side for the downstream connection.
The target noise margin figures with Sky are now around 3dB. I don't think that you will get as good connection speeds though.
Whilst I appreciate that the connection speed is important, please do remember that Sky does not slow your connection down at any time, so overall your connection should be much better than what you had previously.
Why does this kind of thing happen?
When BTO connected you to Sky's kit they may have rerouted your connection between your home and the exchange. The sky equipment will also be in a different position in the exchange and this could be further from the point of entry than the BT Retail kit.
They may also be using copper coated aluminium cable now, instead of pure copper cable. This is mostly a cost saving measure and is in part due to the high theft rate.
