Static IP address?
OK so I'm trying to set up a static IP address. I rang Sky and they said its not a service they offer, however there are tutorials online I can follow in order to achieve this. I've followed them, and still my IP adress is dynamic!
I have a Netgear DG934G router, and running on a Mac.
1. In network settings, I have changed my IP to 192.168.0.55
2. Then I set my DNS settings to Sky's
This is supposed to give me a static IP, but when I test it, its still dynamic...
What am I doing wrong? Does this way work, or will I need to set a dynamic IP in my router settings, if so, how do I do that? I'm quite new to this stuff so a step-by-step would be much appreciated!
Thank you in advance!!

Re: Static IP address?
That gives you a static IP address between your computer and router, is that what you're looking for? If you're looking for a Static External IP then Sky don't offer that.

Re: Static IP address?
What you are getting mixed up with is your public address, which is the one that goes out to the internet and your private address which is the address given to devices within your network. Sky do not do public static addresses, so if you have need for this you will have to set up a Dynamic address with a company like DynamicDNS or No-IP for example, Google them. This type of address maps to your actual public IP address and applies any changes to it automatically. This means that when you want to access something in your home network from a remote location, cameras, DVR, server etc, you enter the dynamic address, which will be something like 'myaddress.no-ip.com.' This address will always find your home network, no matter how often the 'real' IP address changes.

Re: Static IP address?
Thanks for your help.
I'm basically just wanting to get Utorrent to get good upload speeds (they're currently very low) and I was told I need to forward a port, but before I could do that I need a static IP. So is that the case, will I need to sign up with one of those Dynamic Address companies then?

Re: Static IP address?
You don't need a static IP Address with the µTorrent software.
What you do need to do is to enable UPnP on the computer and on the router.

Re: Static IP address?
100kb/s or 100KB/s?
100kb/s would be 100 Kilobits per second so yes it's quite slow
However 100KB/s would be 100 KiloBytes per second or 800 Kilobits per second which would be about right for an ADSL2+ service.
When seeding you are Uploading to other users and the upstream (upload) speed on ADSL2+ is about 1Mbit/s so 0.8Mbit/s of throughput is correct once overheads.etc are taken into account.
Only way to go faster would be to upgrade to fibre/fttc.

Re: Static IP address?
I can't see that 2nd screenshot as it's to small
Was the speedtest run when the torrent client was closed.
Are you able to get the Sync speed stats from the modem?
Depending on which one you have will depend on where the option is, if this' the 2504n you need to find the link saying "futher diagnostic info" or some stuch.

Re: Static IP address?
On µTorrent I only upload at a maximum rate of ~100kB/s. This is perfectly normal for an ADSL connection.
The only ways to improve this would be:
- rent a seed box
- get a fibre/cable connection
- get a 2nd line
Personally I actually normally upload at around 65kB/s as I limit the speed so as the torrents don't hog the bandwidth.
