Power cut and lower noise margin
On Friday evening, we had a power cut. Power was down for about 10 mins. When power was restored, my Sagem 2504n router resynched at almost 14 meg with a noise margin of 5dB.
Before that it had been running all year at just under 12.5 meg, noise margin of around 7dB with an upload of around 0.99 meg.
I wonder what made the noise margin go that low?
It stayed like this for a few more hours and I could notice the improved speeds. However there was another power cut and this time my speeds dropped quite low next time the router resynched.
I emailed Sky and on Saturday, my line was manually profiled and it came back with only 8meg down, 1.024 meg up. So I got back in touch with Sky for another manual intervention and my speeds went to just under 12 meg down, 853 up.
Latest stats are:
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11899 kbps 853 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.5 dB 20.8 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 8.0 dB
It looks like the manual profiles are different to what they were a year or so back.
I have read on here about DLM now has different profiles with noise margins as low as 3db.
I am sure my line could run quite happily on 6db so I have asked Sky to run the DLM again on my line.
I am on the easynet LLU so I wondered if someone could be so kind to post the manual profiles of both down and up speeds.
Also what could I expect from the new DLM?
Will it get my download speed to say 13.5 at a noise margin of around 6dB and would it put the upload to 1024?
Many thanks in advance....Last edited by BroadbandKing; 17-09-12 at 02:04 PM.

Re: Power cut and lower noise margin
Only DLM can set the speeds so that the Noise Margin is below 7dB.
What probably happened is that you reconnected at the better speed because it was in the evening. This is one of the times when you can get a good connection speed (actually perhaps after 9pm).
Personally I would be inclined to ask for someone to restart DLM on your line and see what happens. Remember too that it will only reduce the Noise Margin to a figure where the line is stable. So if your line can't support 3dB, then it will set it a little higher.

Re: Power cut and lower noise margin
Yes managed to get Sky to restart DLM on my line.
Router resynched early hours this morning, latest stats are:
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12488 kbps 921 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.0 dB 20.7 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 8.0 dB

Re: Power cut and lower noise margin
This is better already, but you may hopefully find that it will do some more work tonight.

Another change:

Line Attenuation 36.0 dB 20.7 dB
Noise Margin 3.9 dB 8.0 dB

Re: Power cut and lower noise margin
Well my router ran for 24 hours without any dropouts at 3.9dB but in the early hours, DLM went back to this:
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 12474 kbps 921 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.5 dB 20.7 dB
Noise Margin 6.3 dB 7.5 dB
Pings are around 40ms instead of 30ms. Will let the DLM complete to see what the final figures are.
