WAN connection dropping consistently.
Hi,
Just registered here just to see if anyone would happen to know if a new/third party router would fix my issues.
Every so often, perhaps twice an hour, especially under heavy load, the WAN connection/ADSL link will drop out.
From the router logs I consistently get :
Sep 4 20:55:37 user crit kernel: Line 0: ADSL link down
Now this connection has been pretty flawless until a week or so ago, and has started dropping more frequently.
My stats are :
I have the router plugged into the master socket, 2 micro filters used (to test), connected to my PC via Ethernet, although it will happen if I'm just using wireless. I have rebooted/reset the router.
Just thinking about phoning Sky to see if they can lower the sync speed a little, down to maybe 3500kbps as I'm not too bothered about speed, just stability.
Just wanted to see if anyone had anything they could add or suggest.
Many thanks.

Re: WAN connection dropping consistently.
Couple of things.
How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket
Can you try it in there and then post your stats?
Your attenuation at 44 is not giving you the right download speeds. You are at 4meg but in reality you should get twice as much. (ish)
ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 7mb to 8mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.~ Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ~

Re: WAN connection dropping consistently.
Actually, are you on Connect or Unlimited?

Re: WAN connection dropping consistently.
I'm on Unlimited and my line length is pretty long, 2.5 - 4km maybe?
Anyway I spoke to Sky today, I've already done most of the troubleshooting but all they could advise is I change the RJ11 cable, which I have, but it has made no difference, so I'll try a new router.

Re: WAN connection dropping consistently.
Your attenuation is better than mine, something is wrong somewhere.

Re: WAN connection dropping consistently.
But speed isn't linked solely to attenuation? My SnR is pretty low preventing me from syncing at a higher rate, most likely I have poor wiring/aluminium wiring somewhere. Ultimately I'm not bothered about speed, I just want a stable connection and from my troubleshooting it's either :
1) Router is dying
2) My SnR is dropping due to interference outside my flat at random intervals causing the connection to drop
The connection will drop under completely opposite conditions, it will drop during heavy usage in games/voice communications and it will drop when there is nothing going on i.e middle of the night when I'm in bed.
