Sky Broadband Unlimited - Torrent Usage
Hello,
Just moved to the UK recently, signed up for Sky Broadband Unlimited and was wondering what are the chances of my torrent dowloading being monitored. I am not concerned about the speed or caps, since i am on the Unlimited plan, but my fears are more likely to be from facing high fines or jail time due to torrent usage. Back home, i have been dowloading torrents for the past 8 years without so much as a letter, but i know the UK has stricter rules on torrent monitoring, and i would like to know beforehand if i need to buy a private service to mask my activity from my ISP or am i fine just downloading torrents normally, directly from the website.
I know torrents are basically illegal and the risk of a fine or a letter is always there, but i'd just like to get a general opinion from regular Sky users as to how much they can download and how strict monitoring really is.
Thank you.Last edited by Luppi; 24-07-12 at 01:28 PM.

Re: Sky Broadband Unlimited - Torrent Usage
Sky don't monitor torrents, but the copyright holders do. They join torrent swarms and collect the IP addresses of people sharing their content. They then serve a court order on Sky (or whatever ISP is involved) who are then obliged to hand over the name and address of the person using that IP address.
It does happen, and the risk is yours to take, or not.

Re: Sky Broadband Unlimited - Torrent Usage
Sky does not slow your connection down if you download torrents. As Lucose has pointed out, there are some people trying to close the loophole, and 2014 has been cited as a bad year when more letter are likely to be sent out, including warning letters from the ISPs.
In the news today is a piece about some O2 customers being sent a letter because they have been downloading porn.
BBC News - More than 2,000 O2 'porn pirates' to be sent letters
If this action is successful, then I am sure that other people who download porn can expect similar letters.
