Re: lift & shift
i appreciate your thoughts isitme.
unlike yourself, i only have common sense to go by, but that's exactly what i thought.
i think there was something preventing cst from coming to the same conclusion though.
my biggest concern however, is that although i have no noise today, the fault is obviously
still present. i'm sure this little boo boo will be rectified but when bto do it, it'll be the 5th
time they've been called into action.
i'm sure i've read a few times in these forums that if it gets to 8 or so call outs, parties start
putting their hands up in defeat.
that's a scary thought.

Re: lift & shift
woohoo! get the flags out!
i got a rather unexpected call from a bto guy at the exchange this morning.
he basically did the lift & shift properly, but when he called afterwards there was so much noise on the line, he insisted on coming to my home.
he did a few tests which came back ok, but witnessed my bb still dropping. i then mentioned that both the distribution point under a manhole cover outside & the street cabinet are the last 2 things that haven't been looked at.
long story short? i had water ingress outside.
2 new connectors & a clean of the copper was all it took. i now have zero noise & my router stats are very stable.
just 1 thing though. after 2 reboots & a reset, i can only sync in with this:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8191*kbps 413*kbps
Line Attenuation 23.0*dB 14.4*dB
Noise Margin 16.6*dB 18.2*dB
it's as if it's capped.
the only thing to have changed since the lift & shift today, is that i have a new ip address.
i was on a 173. & i'm now on a 90.
any ideas anyone?

Re: lift & shift
It has been capped due to the problems you have had. Give Sky a call and tell them the wires to the exchange have been fixed and you would now like your line put up to its full speed. If you are told you are getting as much as possible, hang up and call back till you get someone with more than air between their ears. You should be good for 16Mb+.
PS -Make sure they also raise your upload speed.

Re: lift & shift
thanks isitme.
the thing is, throughout this whole 7 week debacle, sky have never once capped me. infact right up until today, during a rare period without any noise i'd sync in at 19999/1175.
i was considering waiting for cst to call tomorrow, check everything is ok with them, then asking for dlm to be run.
i also forgot to mention that my pings to bbc are currently 47 when normally 24.
who knows, maybe the 'new' dlm will use a 6db margin & even with 8ms delay, pop me over the 20mb barrier?
i'd appreciate your thoughts.

Re: lift & shift
Have you tried a reboot? If you are not capped, and you might not be, you will regain your speed. It is possible your speed has been reduced without actually being capped, if this is the case a reboot will bring it back. If it doesn't you will have to call Sky.

Re: lift & shift
yes i've tried 2 reboots. 1 by switching off at the mains for 2 mins & 1 via the gui.
i also did a reset with a biro in the back of the router.
it just seems like a strange thing to have happened all of a sudden & a strange profile too.
had it been the default 4095/606 it would have made more sense to me, even though my profile didn't change with the last lift & shift that went wrong.
i'm going to wait for cst to call tomorrow & make sure they can 'see' my broadband now, then ask for dlm to do it's thing.
poor old sky though.
cst have been absolutely brilliant throughout these past 7 weeks & their reward is that they've ended up being charged 5 times for 5 minutes work & about 5p in materials. not to mention my inconvenience.
thanks for you help isitme, & everyone else that posted.
cheers

Re: lift & shift
That's a pretty good result after what you have been through.

Noise noise noise.

Someone will be getting back to me within 72 hours.
All good fun isn't it.
