Could I get much more out of this? ++
Hello everybody,
I joined Sky last February. I've chosen sky as it was the only other option on the exchange where I am.
At the beginning I've started thinking that the speed I'm having was mainly caused by the rural zone and the low maintenance of the exchange but I'd like now to dig a bit deeper into that.
Here is a snapshot of the ping monitor and the stats from the router are:
Downstream Upstream Connection speed 6143 kbps 797 kbps Line attenuation 31 dB 12.6 dB Noise margin 12.8 dB 16 dB
The distance from my house to the exchange is roughly 1 mile (following google maps roads, not point to point)
What do you think? Is there some margin of improvement? And in case how should I proceed?
I have no tv or freesat/box whatsoever and the only phone has a filter attached.
Should I have a test on the test socket?
Thank you for your help.

Its always worth checking from the Test socket. You will not see an improvement in speed, but may see an increase in your noise margin.
As things stand you have a fair bit of noise margin in hand so should get a bit more speed. Try the Test socket then call Sky and ask them to configure your line as DLM has left it a bit low. With your attenuation you should almost double your speed.

Good news!
Called sky yesterday and a very helpful Ian reconfigured the line for gaming.
He told me the ping went from 70 to 32 but the ping monitor is not reflecting this, dunnow why.
Didn't had the chance to practically test the "new" connection but these are the new stats:
Downstream Upstream Connection speed 10235kbps 796 kbps Line attenuation 31 dB 18 dB Noise margin 7.7 dB 13.6 dB
So far so good!
Thanks!

Using a command prompt, can you ping bbc.co.uk and see what results you get. Thanks.
With sky since 1997.

That's a nice ping for gaming. I had a bit of bother getting gamer profile. I had to ring 3 times before I got it sorted. It's well worth it though. Now I'm on fibre, it's even better
With sky since 1997.

Growl
I don't think I'll ever get fibre on my exchange -.-
BTW is there a way to know if and when there'll be updates on my exchange/cabinet?
I've read around they had plans to get all the "rural" north east to 20 Mb but no news on samknows yet...
SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Ebchester (NEE) Exchange
Thanks!

I think you have been put on the 10240/800 gamer profile, if you were a non gamer you could probably get a fair bit more speed. To a gamer, a lower ping is worth loosing 1 or 2 Mb
