non sky modem/ router recommendations
Hello all, Used this forum recently for help with looking into modem and router bridging.
I want a gigabit network, I want 5ghz wireless 'n' mode as I have approx 12 routers within my flats.
I want a non sky router modem that I can use to install dd-wrt onto.
I have setup a Netgear wnr2000 v2 with dd-wrt and its immense. It is how a router should be. BUT it just isn't practical for my needs its 300mbps, but only 2.4ghz it is only 100mbps network and it is not a modem. Quite an ask I know but I thought if anywhere I would get the best help here.
Oh I appreciate sky don't like you to change your router, If they didn't supply sub standard equipment to start with I wouldn't have to replace it. the Sagecom 2504n and I don't think it is that great, Its very slow and very un-responsive to access.
I would also like to say I did not like the fact that I cannot paste text into this forum

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
I copied (ctrl+c) a model number of my modem from one webpage and tried to paste (ctrl+v) it would not work.
I even tried right click paste, wouldn't work, tried using the "paste as plain text" button, didnt work.
Weird? perhaps I don't know what I am doing as someone on another forum has told me because I won't use UAC and a AV program haha

Thanks for your help.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
All I can suggest is that you look again at what you were doing. I copy & paste quite a few times a day different things into the editor on this forum.
I use a combination of <Ctrl>+C/<Ctrl>+V and right clicking.

As for you original question, have you considered getting another Netgear cable router? The WNDR3700, WNDR3800, WNDR4000 & WNDR4500 all support both 5GHz WiFi and 1Gbit LAN.

Thanks Scubbie, I need modem router. I want to replace the whole lot with one item.
I just been looking at the BiPac router modem. Just not sure if it is compatible with dd-wrt, or even if I need it.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
I would first take a look at any support pages for the dd-wrt firmware. I suspect that you may run into problems as I think it is no longer updated and since then the 5GHz routers have become more common on the UK.
Personally I am using the Netgear DGND3700. There have been a few issueswith the firmware, but otherwise I like the router. Some members are not ecstatic that Billion has released a custom firmware to support MER on the 7800N. This doesn't support the 5GHz WiFi though.
I was hoping that I would be able to use my DGND3700 without the Sky router on SBUF (I current only have ADSL), but it looks like MER will be an issue again. However I will be able to use it by connecting the Sky router to the DGND3700's Ethernet WAN port.
There is a long thread on the DGND3700 in the Technical section. Do take a look if you are interested. I can connect it both via PPPoA directly to the telephone line or via the WAN Ethernet port on my Sagem 2304n.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
thats interesting to know.
Thanks for pointing out about the BiPac not supporting 5ghz, they don't tell you that on the website. I am going to look into the router you recommended. the use of PPoA will help.
