Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
Ahh. You have 12 networks in range of yours, in that case, unless your flat is very big, 5ghz would be good as it gives a wider channel range.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
Actually that is a bit of a sore point. At the moment I only have around 4 channels which i can use on the Netgear. When using 300mbps WiFi, which pairs them, this reduces to effectively 2 to choose from.
Looking at the Wikipedia page, I suspect that it may be because Netgear uses 1 firmware to cover the whole of Europe. In country doesn't want people to use the other channels.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
I was under the impression that EU regs allowed for the use of about 19 channels, in Bands A and B and some more in Band C for outdoor use. Are you sure your router is not configured for the USA, which I think is more restricted. There is an interesting PDF on the use of 5ghz in the UK from Solwise.- http://www.solwise.co.uk/downloads/f...ntheuk5ghz.pdf

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
It is definitely set for Europe.
There are two official firmware versions: North America & Rest of the world.
As for the WiFi channels: List of WLAN channels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I can only connect to channels 36/38 & 40/42. I did chase this with Netgear. They promised that other channels would opened up at a later date with firmware updates. To date this hasn't happened.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
So it looks like the router does not comply with the Transmit Power Control and Dynamic Frequency Selection. Another black mark for Netgear.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
Is there a non standard router that works with sky broadband that will enable me to change the dns settings?

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
I'm using a Billion 7800N that'll allow that. Works very well & has firmware compatible with the MER connection protocol.

Re: non sky modem/ router recommendations
Any standard ADSL router will allow you to change the DNS settings to what you want. The Sky routers are locked down in such a manner to prevent this though.
As for Billion, they do currently have an edge with being the only firm to update their firmware to support Sky's MER system on standard routers.
