downstream and ping help
hi all
been having a few problems with my bb connection firstly my router was synced at around 8900kbps and i was getting a constant ping of around 20ms
which was great it has now dropped to 8200kbps and a ping of over 50ms
which greatly affects my gaming i have phoned sky and asked to check if my max delays are set to 8 and i am on the gamer profile

Re: downstream and ping help
Your lucky to get 8.2Mbps, your attenuation is quite high.
Your line might have been re-routed to the exhange causing speed to drop and attenuation to rise.
With a 7.4db SNR on the donwnstream i dought your gonna get any more speed.
Ping will have gone up because your line is heavily interleaved, not normal for it to be getting pings that, normally only that high when line has errors so line is heavily interleaved ( uses a lot of error correction ) to keep line connected.
Phone sky, ask for a gaming profile.

Re: downstream and ping help
i have been told from sky earlier my line had a lot of errors i spent 30 mins on phone jumping through hoops that have been jumped many times then she told me the errors have cleared and she had fixed it which i peronally think she was lying my SNR is now at 6.8

Re: downstream and ping help
Try opening a Command Prompt and ping bbc.co.uk. You could also go to the Diagnostics section in the router and try a ping to 212.58.241.131.

Re: downstream and ping help
tryed a ping via router settings and got this
PING 212.58.241.131 (212.58.241.131): 56 data bytes
56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=0 ttl=247 time=50.0 ms
56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=1 ttl=247 time=50.0 ms
56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=2 ttl=247 time=50.0 ms
56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=3 ttl=247 time=50.0 ms
--- 212.58.241.131 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 50.0/50.0/50.0 ms
which works out at 50ms i have emailed and phoned sky countless times asking to reduce my max delays to 8 and gamer profile which they say i am on
but when i was on it i had a 20-35ms
so why the jump to 50ms
i have been told i have loads of errors on my line could a faulty router cause this by any chance??
i have ask sky this morning via email if this could be the case

Re: downstream and ping help
If you were once able to get 8.9Mb with a 20ms ping, then your line has developed a fault. As it stands you are syncing a bit too high for your attenuation. The normal speed for this would be 6-7Mb. If ping is your main concern, you should call Sky and ask them to reduce your speed. This should reduce the error rate on your line and decrease the latency. Although you may well be on a 'gamer profile', the speed is probably set too high.
