new to sky broadband
i have just moved into an apartment and taken sky broadband unlimited and have been told on the letter that i would expect to receive downloads speeds of between 12.9 and 19 mb/s on my line as im only approximately 150 yards away from my exchange. I find it a bit strange that no BT engineerer came out to connect me as i only had a text message the next day to say that my line was activated which to my amazement it was, so how did they manage to connect me without gaining access to my apartment? im into the second day of DLM and im only getting around 5 mb/s and the speeds are very eratic and fluctuate from 0.7 and go up to around 5.3 mb/s and they become even more eratic during the evening, is this normal for new customers? im having serious consideration about going to another isp as i dont see why i should wait 10 days for so called DLM to kick in (if it does) and by that time my right to cancel my broadband would've passed. the reason why im posting this is because i had the same problem with another isp a few years ago and it ended up being a problem with my line outside, so if anybody can help me on this one then it would be appreciated. below are my stats.

Re: new to sky broadband
DLM is part and parcel of Sky Broadband, once the 10 days is over you should have a decent speed looking at your stats.
BT don't need to come to your house to connect you, they do it at the exchange.
Give it the chance to run, I would expect to see,
ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service. This ADSL2 Line Speed Calculator is a best guess only, as to the broadband speed that maybe possible on your telephone line. The checker provides results of up to 24mb with the data that is made available to us. This is purely for indication only and should not be classed as the Line Speed that you would receive on any ADSL or LLU product from another ISP.~ Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ~

Re: new to sky broadband
i'm barely qualified to comment tony35, but i've never seen a downstream line attenuation as low as 10.
you could be 1 of those rare people that dlm sets at even higher than the 'upto' 20 meg that sky quote.
keep us posted.

Re: new to sky broadband
thanks gymno, i do know a little about those stats and i should be getting in a couple of days very fast broadband hopefully so fingers crossed and i will let you know. my concerns are that im getting very low and very eratic speeds all day and they vary. i know this because im constantly doing speedtests @ My Broadband Speed - Broadband Speed Tester and each speedtest i do gives me different results from low to high!. maybe its just dlm but i would've thought as i have only joined sky that my speedtests would be constant to whatever dlm has set my speed to be on my router but who knows. i guess i am one of the lucky ones to be a stones throw away from my exchange in llanelli.

Re: new to sky broadband
well all i can say is that i worried a lot about my connection early on but sky did me proud in the end.
sky's estimate: 11.2 - 18 mb
line attenuation: 22.5 db
current speed: 19999 kbps
my online speed test results were all over the place during dlm, but may be because i use a ps3 browser. i'd try several different ones just to see as some vary a lot anyway.

Re: new to sky broadband
I was just about to post a similar issue, but you guys have answered it above. I do have one question tho. My nephew unplugged the router a few hours after we plugged it in so its been off for a day.
Will DLM now still do its thang? or do I need to do anything
cheers

Re: new to sky broadband
Just plug it in again, DLM is actually relatively tolerant in many cases. Start a new thread if you suspect any issues and post the router's stats.
