High attenuation on new line
Hi,
I might be being a bit hasty here but I have just had a new Sky Unlimited line installed and I am really shocked by my downstream line attenuation.

Line Attenuation 63.5db 31.5db
Noise Margin 6.9db 8.0db
I am under 1km from the exchange by road and lived in a property across the road 4 months ago which had a constant stable connection of around 16.5mb (I think I had a line attenuation of 27db but can't guarantee).
A few key points:
- I have just left virgin during the 28 day cancellation but the BT engineer left the Virgin faceplate in
- I have plugged the router directly into the test socket with a filter and short telephone cable
- I am using Cat5e cable to connect my pc to the router
- The router is the one I had at my previous flat (a Dlink DSL) as they have not sent my new one yet
- Sky have confirmed today that once DLM is over I should be able to receive 11.5mb minimum
I am really worried that the wiring is busted seeing as the line attenuation is so high. I tried to get them to look at the line but they can't until tomorrow when it should show as activated on their system. I have been waiting for a long time for it to be installed and just wanted to check if anyone has any ideas as to how this could be fixed.

Re: High attenuation on new line
You might find that when the line is fully activated it will sort itself out.

Re: High attenuation on new line
Oh my word. I nearly wet myself laughing at how stupid I had been. When you posted that I went hunting for a better cable and managed to find one, went to plug it in and realised I had connected the router to the Phone port on the filter.
Unbelievably embarrassed about that but thought I'd better put a reply in case some other fool does the same thing.
Stats are now:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5db 18.2db
Noise Margin 16.9db 18.5db
Thanks for the help, such a relief that it's working properly!

Re: High attenuation on new line
Plenty of room for an increase there too with your 16db noise margin.
I'm surprised it worked at all though!
