Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Hi
I have had ADSL for several years now and conected via a Netgear DG834G.
This conected at:
Down 8128kbps Up 832kbps
Line Attenuation down 30db Up 19 db
Noise Margin down 6.0db up 9db
Download speed was 6.87mb/s Upload speed was 0.65mb/s
I now have moved over to Sky Unlimited
I wish to leave my current network as it is and connect to the internet via the Sky Sagemcom.
Sagemcom stats are:
Connection Speed down 4095 kbps Up 605 kbps
Line Attenuation Down 32.0 dB Up 18.4 dB
Noise Margin Down 16.3 dB Up 18.2
The problem I am having is making a wireless conection between the two routers and is the down noise margin of 16.3db going to be a broblem?
Would there be a guide how to conect these to routers?
Thanks in advanceLast edited by Mike555; 16-02-12 at 01:28 PM.

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Firstly the first set of stats are on an ADSL1 connection. The Sky router is on ADSL2+ and the initial DLM process hasn't started yet.
Looking at your Line Attenuation and using the tool available on this site (see the link above), you should expect to get between 12mb to 14mb. That Noise Margin will drop in due course as the DLM process does its job.
I am guessing that you have the Sagem 2504N as this is the router that should be shipped to new customers now. It is a WiFi n router, with a max WiFi speed of 144Mb/s. I believe that there is an option to connect the Netgear to another Netgear (at least there is for the DG834GT), but this only works with WEP. There is no such feature on the Sagem 2504N and WEP is not a safe encryption system to use on your WiFi.
I would suggest that you connect the two via a long Ethernet cable or a pair of HomePlugs. See the document in the thread linked below to show you what can be achieved:

You would have to check if the DG834g has WDS enabled in its firmware. Some versions do and some don't. If it is enabled there would be a good chance of getting it to connect to the Sagem wirelessly. As it is only a wireless g router, how it would perform I don't really know.

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Hi
Thanks for the info.
The Sky router/modem is upstairs and connected via network cable to a Sky HD Box, another network cable connects to a network switch, this then connects to several PC's. This is working fine.
Laptops are working fine with the "N" wifi, but speed seems to be limited to 72kbps and not the expected 144Kbps.
Downstairs has another Sky HD Box, XBox and PS3, would you reccomend Sky's own wireless add-on or HomePlugs, if HomePlugs what speed as they seem to range from 16Kbps to 500Kbps?
Thanks in advance

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
You are so cruel to me
The Sagem 2504N broadcasts on a single channel at up to 144Mb/s.
A lot of WiFi n adaptors supplied with Laptops, for example, will only connect at up to 72Mb/s over a single channel. If you were to connect to a router which broadcastsup toupto 150Mb/s over a paired channel, then these same laptops would connectup toupto 150Mb/s. A 300Mb/s WiFi connection uses paired channels. The same laptops would also connect to this at up to 150Mb/s.
...don't you just love the computer industry?
Should adaptor an adapter thaup torks at upto 300Mb/s, you could then connect at the full 144Mb/s the the Sagem 2504N can offer.
Agreed.

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Thanks Again.
I surpose the next question would be, what would be the very best modem/router to connect to Sky?
Or connect to Sky's own modem/router via a network cable and turn it in to just a modem and let the new router do the rest?
Thanks in advance

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Take a look at this thread: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/askin...est-speed.html
I normally also suggest that you consider what you do at home on the Internet and over your home network.
Would you really benefit from having a 1Gbit LAN or 300Mb/s WiFi? An old computer won't make the most of a 1Gbit LAN card and if you don't do any heavy work over the WiFi, would you really make use of the added speed?
USB ports on routers are nice, but there are other alternative ideas available.
One of the things that I like about the Netgear DGND3700 is that it has both ADSL & Ethernet WAN ports. Whilst no one has reported yet whether it will connect on a SBUF connection, it does work on BT Infinity, which is essentially the same thing. I did try it on a Virgin connection, but it wouldn't work.Netgear disabled the Cable side with firmware v1.0.0.12 and still hasn't re-enabled it.
Netgear are in the process of releasing the DGND3800 and the DGND4000 is in the wind too. Both these promise to progress the DGND3700 specs a little further.
There are cable equivalents of these routers. They all start with 'WNDR'. These will not work on your current connection, unless you used the Sky router effectively as a Modem.

Re: Sky Sagemcom F@ST2504n Wireless To Netgear DG834G
Such a sweeping statement. There are lots of routers mentioned in this thread, it would have helped to be more specific, but I see that you have started your own thread. I'll take a look once I've caught up.
Edit: Well I have caught up with some of your many other posts and I see that you have Sky Connect. Your issues are nothing to do with the router. They are everything to do with the package that you are subscribing to.
