third party router problems
I spoke to Sky before Christmas as my Netgear router was not performing very well. They went through all sorts of tricks to make it faster but it failed to respond. They stated that I could buy my own router and it would not be a problem. Eventually I got round to buying a Netgear N600 and have now spend 3 days trying to set it up. After contacting Sky again they stated I could Not use my own router that they never said that and would not assist in supplying ISP details or any other info. After searching the internet I found out how to obtain my password/user name but each time I attempt to set up the new router and insert this info the router fails... can anyone help me? or am I stuck with the old router forever...
I hope I haven't wasted my money
thanks for any help

Read the non-Sky router Q&A in the passwords section, all the info is in there

Re: third party router problems
Just a couple of additional things:
- Don't use the automatic setup, the router misreads Sky's connection and will attempt to set you up with a PPPoE connection, this is incorrect.
- Update the firmware to the latest version: v1.0.0.17, if you haven't go this version installed.

Re: third party router problems
A few questions for you:
What connection does the Sky router report when you connect it? (i.e. PPPoA or MER)
When you gained the password from the Sky router, did you copy and paste the information across?
Assuming that the connection is PPPoA and not MER, then the settings should be:
Encapsulation : PPPoA
Multiplexing Method : VC-Based / VC-Mux
VPI : 0
VCI : 38
DSL Mode : Auto or ADSL2+
MTU : 1500 (however 1458 will work fine if you can not set it this high)
If the connection is MER, then the Netgear router will not work on your Sky connection.
