Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
All,
Anyone please help?
I am on sky unlimited - okay, I am not exeactly close to the main exchange, but surely things should be better .. ??
These are my stats after being migrated to MER ...
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1536 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 31.1 db
Noise Margin 13.3 db 16.0 db
The reason I ask is that things seem to be so much slower?
I have run many tests and the results are weird - some say I get 968kbps download others say I get 1.28 Mb ...Things just seem so much slower ..
Any advice gratefully received before I get on the phone and contact sky direct to find out why things have seemed have slowed down so much ..
Thanks & Regards
mr Platypus

A friendly phone call to Sky is in order.
You should be able to achieve much more than that.
Sky uses a target noise margin of 7dB for both the up & down connections.

Reboot first in case the line has got stuck. If it (speed) still doesn't up then call Sky as suggested

Re: Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
After turning my router on and off and a phone call to sky, here are my new stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4605 kbps 861 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 07.3 db 10.7 db
Sorry, I'm not so good with number crunching - how do the numbers look to you now?
** Update **
Since posting my last comment, my broadband went off completely!
Another call to sky revealed that there was a problem - some minor adjustments at their end and at mine (honest guvnor..) and connectivity restored.
Now my stats show:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4605 kbps 861 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 30.9 db
Noise Margin 6.7 db 10.8 db

Re: Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
Those stats are just fine.
The noise margin for the downstream is nearer to 7dB (Sky's target). The upstream won't get much higher as Sky uses specific profiles.
The important thing there is that the upstream isn't too slow and you've got about the best for the downstream for your line.

Re: Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
Scubbie and IAmNotTheEnemy,
I've done a couple of speed tests, here are the results:
SpeedTest.Net:
Ping: 55 ms
Download Speed: 3.78
Upload Speed: 0.72
Speed.io
Download: 3931
Upload: 761
Ping: 34
Connections: 1130
In comparing these with Scubbie - mine seem terrible
Please advise

Re: Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
My home is a lot closer to the telephone exchange than you are. The ADSL signal degrades with longer lines. It also degrades with interference, poor quality cable and poor connections in the home.
There are several members who have better stats than myself, but I have made the most of my connection. That is all we can do for any member.
With this in mind, what you could do now is to look at your home setup. Ideally you should always connect the router to the Master Socket. If possible you could temporarily use the Test Socket (see previous link for details) to see if there is any improvement in the Line Attenuation.
If there is any improvements in the Test Socket, then a filtered faceplate is definitely a great idea.
Once the filtered faceplate has been fitted, another friendly call to Sky will be in order if you have a noise margin significantly larger than 7dB.
finally, another issue with some people, never connect the router via any form of an extension. There are some specific good quality cables for the ADSL connection. These are fine up to about 5m, but personally I always advise that the short grey ADSL cable supplied with the router should be used, at least initially whilst you are sorting out the connection stats.
Extensions tend to be made from poorer quality cable and the signal degrades further, hence why I avoid them.

Re: Are my stats okay ? I've been switched over to MER
I've had another case of non service - I've since gotten back to sky...
The temporary resolution was for me to take the main face plate off the bottom of the telephone connection .. and plug the adsl filter into the socket that is available underneath to the right of the box.
I will now go and have a look at what the current state of play is to understand things better for myself via the links on this site.

That would indicate an internal wiring fault which is up to you to fix
