Sky advised me to buy my own router
Hi All,
I have decided to come back to sky broadband after swapping to another supplier for two months.
I called up Sky, placed my order and was promised a Wireless N router. Instead they sent me the old Netgear version.
I rang Sky who confirmed that they do not have of the wifi N routers available at the moment and I should go out an buy my own and they would refund. I queried this as I have used my own routers with Sky previously, but always had to use the password generator. I was told no, now its firstname.surname@sky as the username and the password matches my Sky online account.
I was still unsure the following day so I thought I would double check. Again I was told by an operator to buy my own and I would be refunded.
Is this normal of Sky to suggest a non Sky router?

Are they going to refund you if you go out and buy a £100+ router? I can't see it somehow. It is a pity you do not have it in writing.
If this is true it is going to be very welcome news to many users.

Unless they've literally changed this in the past couple of days, this is not the case whatsoever. And I highly doubt the logins have been changed, just sounds to me you got through to a couple of people who don't have a clue and wanted you off the phone.

I use my own router with their full knowledge. They just told me they won't support it.
This was after they sent me two that were proved to be rubbish, and were causing issues.
Now when I call them they are fully aware of my own kit being connected.
They seem to be taking a similar stance to o2 in that you should connect their router if you need problems solving.

Re: Sky advised me to buy my own router
Probably thousands use their own router, but the point here is that they are saying the log on method is being changed from a router based one to a user based one, as almost all other ISPs use. This is the main point, not so much they are allowing the use of your own router. I am inclined to agree with User05.

Re: Sky advised me to buy my own router
Just received an N router by courier this am - so I think you have a dodgy Sky operator.

Re: Sky advised me to buy my own router
Thanks all for the posts.
As for not having the information in writing, I actually do.
The second time I called the operator read to me direct from the previous operator notes. Saying "customer will buy his own router and Sky to refund".
Im looking at a nice Cisco layer 3 router/switch with POE at the moment 7k. I could have like 6 vlans for a laugh.Last edited by noony; 16-11-11 at 09:35 PM.

Re: Sky advised me to buy my own router
Well confirmed. Im on the phone to Sky as I write this. They have just refunded me £35 for the price of the router. However they are now refusing to give me the username and password.
This is amazing the first operator I spoke was so confused she randomly forwarded my call to another department. Second operator tried to fob me off with the WPA key, but did action a refund. Third operator refused to give me any details.
So now they are sending me out a new router.
So will the password generator work for the older black d-link router?Last edited by noony; 17-11-11 at 10:13 AM.
