Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
I was always synced at over 17000kbps on downstream for nearly 2 years as I live quite close to the exchange. I'm on the Unlimited package.
Since moving my line rental over to Sky 2 days ago, I am only syncing at 4096 kbps on downstream, even after multiple router reboots and power cycles.
Have Sky moved me to G.DMT?
Here are my router stats now:
Connection Speed 4093 kbps 604 kbps
Line Attenuation 24 db 0 db
Noise Margin 26 db 16 db
I've also noticed the network type has changed from PPoE to MER.
So, do I need to contact Sky to change my line to ADSL2+? Last time I did it online via their KANA. Looks like that's gone now though so what is the best number to contact to get Sky to change my line speed?Last edited by Vegeta; 08-11-11 at 10:35 PM.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Your connection has been reset. I would suggest that DLM will start within the next two days. If it hasn't started by Thursday morning give Sky a friendly call.
DLM should start within 3 days, but it can be 4 days. It will typically last between 3 to 10 days.
If you like, once the DLM has completed, feel free to post your stats so that we can see if you are getting the best from your connection.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Is the DLM now over? Speed is still nearly 2x slower than before:
Connection Speed 9212 kbps 944 kbps
Line Attenuation 24 db 13 db
Noise Margin 15 db 11 db
I haven't reset the router since creating this thread.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Sky's target for the Noise Margins on both the streams is 7dB. You have plenty of room for improvement yet.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Connection has improved again but still more room for improvement, upto 18000 kbps like it was before:
Connection Speed 12285 kbps 944 kbps
Line Attenuation 25 db 13 db
Noise Margin 14 db 11 db

Have some patience, DLM is doing it's job. You've got until the 16th before you should think of calling Sky

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Ok, so I think DLM has done its job but the downstream is about 4000 kbps slower than before but the upload speed is about 200 kbps faster. Is the downstream slower because the upstream is faster than before?
Connection Speed 13309 kbps 944 kbps
Line Attenuation 25 db 13 db
Noise Margin 7 db 11 db
Here is what I used to get when I had my line with BT:
I know that pic says I got 18682 kbps downstream but it was much more stable at around 17500 kbps with a noise margin of 7. Can the slower downstream also be due to my line rental now being with Sky rather than BT?

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Although it might lose a little on your connection speed, I would suggest that you should switch off you router for about 1/2 a minute and then switch it back on again.
That noise margin is too low and likely to cause you more problems.
By power cycling the router you may help to improve the upstream connection speed as well.
Edit: Sorry, ignore that, I misread your post.
The Noise Margins that you now have are ideal for Sky. Your old figures were the ones with the problem.
Since BTO have changed the telephone wires which you are now using, your connection will have different properties to what it had previously.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
Ok, there is still room for improvement if the target noise margin for Sky is 7db.
Can I contact Sky via an online contact form for them to adjust my line speed? If so, what is the webpage address?
Thanks.

Re: Upgraded to Sky Line Rental and speeds are low
You would definitely benefit now from making a friendly call to Sky. Please be aware that not everyone has suitable access or training to correctly configure your line, so a few calls may be required. Please post your stats once it has been completed so that we can confirm that all is in order.
The tool on this site shows that you should be able to achieve between 16-20Mb. I would guess around 17-18Mb based on your previous figures, but this can vary.
The upstream connection should also be able to get above 1Mb. This is often forgotten, so do take a look whilst on the phone as that adjust it.
