It is not just about speed. Sky are still using decades old copper wire to connect from the cabinet to the exchange which causes many of the problems. This in its self makes it worthwhile going for a brand new connection using the latest technology. You are far less likely to suffer from 'errors on the line' and as the attenuation is a great deal lower on fibre, your latency should be much better.
