New modem slower speed
Hello, I was wondering if someone could give me some advise please.
I recently paid sky £35 and upgraded to a F@ST2504n, my wireless range was has improved (which was the reason for the upgrade) but I now seem to be getting very slow download speeds.
My report is as follows
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6710 kbps 746 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 dB 21.8 dB
Noise Margin 9.7 dB 8.5 dB
This info isn't far off what I used to get with the old modem however when I run a speed test I'm only getting the following
Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 10:32 1340 kbps (168kB/s) 631 kbps (78.9kB/s)
Today 10:04 1900 kbps (238kB/s) 634 kbps (79.3kB/s)
Today 10:03 1905 kbps (238kB/s) 634 kbps (79.3kB/s)
I basically just unplugged the old modem and plugged the new one in, should I of installed some new software or something I'm a bit confused as to why I'm getting such slow speeds.
Thanks

Re: New modem slower speed
Ok so doing some reading on the forums I decided to try testing useing a wired connection and my speeds jumps uo to around 6.56Mbps
So, is there a way of improving wireless speed?
Thanks

Re: New modem slower speed
What were the connection stats reported by your old router?
For the moment ignore any speed test results as it looks like you are using the WiFi to produce those. It may be that you need to reposition the router to improve the connection a little more.
You should not need to install any new software for the new router. The CD ROM that Sky supplies re-badges Internet Explorer and gives you a shortcut to the Sky router. Beyond that I personally wouldn't touch it.
As for the connection stats, you do actually have room for improvement. Before calling Sky, could you confirm whether your router is connected to the master socket, whether you are using microfilters or a filtered faceplate and if there are any extensions.

Re: New modem slower speed
As it is the wireless that is causing the problem, try changing the router wireless channel. The best way it to download Router Stats Lite and use that to discover the channels in use in your area. Set your channel to one as far from those in use as possible.
