[SOLVED] Line errors and loss of speed
Hi,
I've been having a few issues with my Sky BB connection over the last week and today it peaked with my BB connection dropping from 18mb to 10mb over night. I contacted Sky about this and they said that there was a lot of errors on my line and they then ran through the whole "Run it through the master socket" routine, as they do (I'm always plugged into the master socket) and get back to them. Before getting back to them, I went out and brought new RJ11 cable and a new ADSL filter thinking they may be the culprit. I've plugged these in and the connection has jumped back up to 17.4mb, but I've noticed that as soon as I turned it on, I had 2 uncorrectable errors on the downstream and 1 on the upstream.
Mode: ADSL2 PLUS
Type: ANNEX_A
Status: Showtime
Downstream Upstream
Rate (Kbps): 17440 kbps 1040 kbps
SNR Margin (dB): 6.1 8.0
Attenuation (dB): 26.0 14.5
Output Power (dBm): 20.3 12.3
Super Frames: 55580 55582
RS Correctable Errors: 45995 3
RS Uncorrectable Errors: 2 1
HEC Errors: 14 0
Total Cells: 56266 40793
Data Cells: 56240 40793
Bit Errors: 0 0
My question is, is there an "acceptable" amount of uncorrectable errors, or do I have an issue elsewhere looking at my stats?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
I might be that someone was still playing with your connection.
I would be tempted to leave it for tonight, little point in chasing it just now anyway, and see what happens in the morning.
If there is still a problem, contact Sky Support again.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
Thanks for the reply.
This issue has been happening since I installed the router nearly 2 weeks ago. My line is resyncing a minimum of twice a day, sometimes up to 6 times a day.
The current stats are sitting at:
Mode: ADSL2 PLUS
Type: ANNEX_A
Status: Showtime
Downstream Upstream
Rate (Kbps): 16785 kbps 1040 kbps
SNR Margin (dB): 6.5 8.5
Attenuation (dB): 26.0 14.5
Output Power (dBm): 20.3 12.3
Super Frames: 1952475 1952469
RS Correctable Errors: 13841 64
RS Uncorrectable Errors: 1007 1
HEC Errors: 14803 0
Total Cells: 87048 79982
Data Cells: 2564486 315559
Bit Errors: 0 0
I have read online a lot of stories with the chipset (Trend) on the 2740R not running well at all on Sky or TalkTalk connections, so I am going to return the router and bite the bullet and purchase a Billion BiPac 7800N.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
To quickly prove/disprove the router, could you plug your Sky router back in, or has it died?
Leave it running for a few hours to see how stable it is, then give Sky a call to see if you can find someone who can confirm whether or not there are any fresh errors showing on your line.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
Thanks for the reply.
I ran my 2740B as all my previous Sky routers burned out and that ran fine, so it seems like the 2740R is just no good.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
Do you have a friend whom you could talk with?
Perhaps you could take your router to their home or borrow their Sky router.
I would also be concerned why you have gone through so many Sky routers. What kind of things happened to them and which models were they?

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
Thanks for the reply.
I'll be getting someone else to test the router for me (they are on Sky also).
I've had 2 Netgear routers supplied by Sky and they both overheated within the first 3 months of having them. I stopped using Sky routers back in 2009/2010 due to it.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
They do not give enough emphasis to standing the router on its end to allow all-round air flow. I would guess you were leaving it flat. Using a router on flat is a good way to make it into a toaster
This applies to almost all routers, not just the Sky ones.

Re: Line errors and loss of speed
If I remember correctly, the Netgears had a side stand which I used. I must have just been extremely unlucky.
