the main phone plugs into the telephone socket and the other phone is plugged into the mains only.

That's OK, it is a wireless phone, with the charger plugged into the mains. It is unlikely to effect your broadband, but you could try unplugging it and taking your stats. It is not unknown for some PSUs to effect the router and cause the noise margin to fall. You are looking for an increase in speed or a rise in the noise margin figure.
I'm afraid that is all I can suggest, apart from trying another router if you have one. Maybe someone else can make a suggestion.
