Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
I'm well aware that the download speed I get won't be the same as the connection speed, but I really think I should at least expect around 80% of the speeds.
My Router Stats were as follows:
NetGear DG934 [Sky Firmware] V2-Black
ADSL Link/Downstream/Upstream
Connection Speed/5019 kbps/797 kbps
Line Attenuation/30 db/14 db
Noise Margin/7 db/16 db
From a few speedtests (from the one on this site) the best result I've gotten is:
D/L:1536Kbps
U/L:620Kbps
I've also tested it through my mobile broadband (the results were better than expected), so that should eliminate computer-related problems.
I've also tested through the master test socket thing (the one inside), results were very similar.
I'm more than happy with using my mobile broadband for my laptop, but using it with consoles causes NAT issues.
I also don't understand how the upload speed seems fairly acceptable compared to the connection speed yet the download result is drastically different.
Are there any other things I can try? Could it be a router problem?

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
It sounds more like a wireless issue, have you tried with a wire?

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
I'll have to borrow a cable from work to test that tomorrow.
I'm tempted to buy a Wireless N router anyway, but I don't think Sky provide the details needed to create a connection through a different router. I'm guessing there is a tool to "retrieve" it from the router, but would this be allowed?

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
1000's do it and as of yet nobody has been kicked for doing so.
You could always piggyback the N router if you wanted.

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
Your actual sync speed is very low for your attenuation, you should have about 3 times what you are getting.
Plug into your Test socket and post the stats from there, use only the cable and filter supplied by Sky. Your speed will probably be the same, but post your stats anyway.

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
I tested from the socket yesterday and there wasn't enough difference to bother posting.
Doesn't the sync speed also depend on the exchange itself - 4-5Mbps seems to be the highest available in my area (apart from BT/Virgin, which I'm guessing are cable services)? I've checked the map and the actual distance is less than that (but taking into account that the lines probably aren't straight, it seems about right)
Anyway, I'm not as bothered as I was yesterday. For the first time in ages, the speed seems to be 3.5-4Mbps. I'll keep an eye for it, but hopefully it was a technical problem with the line that has now been sorted. Or something.

Re: Download Speed Nothing Like Connection Speed
Plug it in and humour us, the speed may not have changed but the attenuation and noise margin may have.
