Download speed dropped from 2m/s to 300k again

A few months ago I had a few threads on here about my download speed. I also had noise on my line. After a lot of phone calls to sky and bt and over a month of problems and possible solutions, I risked the cost of a bt engineer coming out and he found a problem with the line going to my house.

Now the same thing is happening again, though this time I don't have the noise on my line.

My stats are -

Do these look ok? I can't remember if those line and noise stats are high or not

Your current stats look fine. You should be able to get a speed test result above 14Mb/s from speedtest.net.

Give it a go on a wired connection.

Just ran the speed test and got upload of 8.9m and down of 0.34 and ping 61

I download from hotfile and filesonic with premium accounts and sometimes it jumps to 1.5m, but a lot of the time I am only getting 300k

It's not connected to your problem but you should be getting more upload speed but would need to call Sky to get it sorted.

As has been pointed out, your speeds should be a lot better than this.

The download speed from hotfile & filesonic, when it jumps to 1.5m is actually closer to what you should expect. I suspect that it actually reads '1.5MB/s' rather than '1.5Mb/s'.

Note the use of capitals. It is the difference between bits and Bytes and is around 8 times different in terms of speed.

It is likely that there is an error of your telephone line.

I would be inclined to run through all the same tests again to see if you can confirm that the problem is external once more (i.e. use the test socket, confirm all extensions are dead, perform a quiet line test, monitor your router stats & connection times).

If there is any sign of a problem, then you are entitled to have it fixed again more. Should it occur 20 times, then you would still be entitled to have it repaired.

With your sync you should have a download speed of 1.9-2.0MB, something is effecting your throughput. Try starting in Safe Mode with Networking and do a speed test at Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester and post your result.

You really need to get your upload speed increased, you should be getting nearly 3 times your present speed. Up load is a lot more important than many realise for a good all-round performance. Call Sky asap and get them to increase it.

But I do have proof... As soon as he fires up Hotspot Sheild (which encrypts packets) his speed will double..,

Let's hope he tries this and gets back to us.

Doesn't matter which ISP I'm with I'll always have Hotspot Sheild on my computer. I've done a lot of reading and the internet here in the UK is all restricted and traffic shaped now. It's all tightly controlled now.
