Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
Hi all I'm new to this so please bare with me. I've had sky umlimited for almost a year now and up until this point I got constant download speeds of 735 kbs but in the last few days its suddenly dropped and I can't understand why?
I've called sky who tested a few things and said my internet speed is fine but they did say it was 7 mb which was news to me as i always thought I had a 1 mb connection so I'm thinking it's possibly something thats been upgraded and is now causing problems maybe?
I ran a speed test and that said i should be getting 5480 kbs which is confusing me even more any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Mark

Well, you should be connecting at nearly double that speed so chances are things your end are causing some issues. Remove all devices other than the router and connect to the test socket if you have one. Also, are you using Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

Re: Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
I don't have a test socket I'm afraid and I don't have any other devices connected to my router except for this computer which is connected by ethernet my flat mate connects by wi-fi but he's not connected at the moment. As I said before as far as I can tell nothing in my set up has changed apart from the speed

Re: Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
just an update my download speed has suddenly gone up to 700 kbs+ but its not constant its jumping from 550-700+ it feels like traffic management to me but I asked Sky about this and they said they dont have traffic management. I'm not complaining right now but I've got a feeling it'll be the same tomorrow before this sort of time

Traffic management is not the issue.
Any noise/issues on your landline?
How many telephone sockets do you use?
Is there a microfilter connected directly into each telephone socket in use, ensuring that nothing is before the filter?
Is the router connected to the master socket or an extension socket?
Are you using the short grey dsl cable that Sky provided, or running an extension telephone cable to the router?
Do you have Sky tv connected to any telephone sockets?

Re: Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
I'm glad to hear it it's just that after experiencing it with BT (My previous supplier) it seemed very similar
No there used to be a crackle all the time but it's been clear for months and I've just checked it still is
1 socket there's only one in my flat
Yes it's connected directly to the socket
I'm assuming the master as I can't find another
Yes I'm using the grey cable sky provided
Yes when i had sky installed they fitted a double socket which had a wire coming out of it and is connected to the sky box I changed this set up as i found the telephone line clearer and the internet more stable. My current set up is the micro filter into the socket then the double socket into that the telephone plugged into the filter with the other socket spare
thanks guys i really do appreciate it

Re: Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
With those stats, the line could be building high amounts of errors causing bad throughput. As mentioned earlier, you should be syncing in at a much higher speed for a start.
Try unplugging everything from the telephone socket, grab a different filter and just have the new filter and router connected without the phone or sky tv/splitters in the mix. Re-take the stats once you've done that and post them up.
If they look no better, then you're probably going to find wiring is holding you back as it's notorious in flats. Try unscrewing the master socket faceplate and posting up how the wiring looks (what wires go into which terminals) for some further assistance.

Re: Sudden drop in speed from 735 kbs to 35 kbs help???
If your flatmate is using torrents or P2P at full rate it will kill your speed. Make sure he/she is putting a throttle on the download/upload speed.
Your sync speed needs looking into, as mentioned, you should have almost double the speed you have.
