Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
the past few nights i have noticed considerable problems with the broadband connection from my sagem router.
at around 6pm or 7pm the connection has been non existent, then its been back on solidly from around 11pm
the dropping out has been going on on a really annoyingly persistant basis since we moved from o2 broadband to sky broadband.
this week i even bought homeplug adapters to see if they could boost the connection but seems to have had no effect, particularly between 6 and 11 when it just shuts off and the modem status goes into a loop of "ADSL line down" ADSL training and PPP server down.
would be really grateful for any help; cheers.
current stats from the router are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 192 kbps 758 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 db 29.4 db
Noise Margin 14.9 db 7.0 db
at about 10pm, the noise margin difference was a lot wider. if that helps.Last edited by hockers90; 12-05-11 at 12:45 AM.

Re: Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
Can you check to see if this is when you local street lights are switched on?
With such a regular time pattern it sounds specifically like Radio Frequency Interference.
The problem could also be caused by a television of some other electrical device.
Essentially you will need to identify where the item is and tactfully advice the owner to get it repaired.
If it is the street lights, then the council will normally repair it promptly.
Take a look at this site: RF Interference troubleshooting SBC DSL FAQ | DSLReports.com, ISP Information
There is a frequency that you can tune an AM radio into, but I've forgotten it for the moment. Maybe someone else can post it please.

Re: Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
With your attenuation and that download sync you have a real problem somewhere.
Can you get the stats again from the TEST socket - How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket
If they don't improve dramtically then it looks like you have a line fault and will need to ring your supplier.

Actually I should ask, what are the stats like during normal hours?

Re: Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
Here is the master test socket stats. This is just the adsl cable in a micro filter to the test socket.
Seems to be loading pages a lot quicker.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4731 kbps 798 kbps
Line Attenuation 49.5 db 28.7 db
Noise Margin 8.7 db 16.0 db

Re: Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
Well those stats show that you have a problem with the internal wiring. Do you have a microfilter on EVERY phone socket in the property?
The easiest soloution would be to fit a filtered faceplate and run the router directly from it, this will then isolate the broadband signal from everything else.

Re: Dodgy connection from 7-11pm
This would appear to be the best location to connect your router.
In addition to Smithy99's suggestion of plugging a microfilter into each socket, could you first check that each extension socket is dead first please?
You may also wish to investigate a filtered faceplate and install it at the master socket. This would effectively filter the ADSL signal from all the internal wiring.
Finally, should the signal drop again this evening, a little bird dropped me a PM to remind me the frequency to check:
612KHz

Use a portable AM radio and wander around your home first, then take a walk outside towards your green street cabinet. This should locate the cause, but it could be a little further.
In one episode described on this forum, it was found to be someone's faulty TV set. The person lived some distance from the person concerned and it was actually interfering with a lot of people.
Street lights, traffic lights and all manner of other electrical devices can cause the problem.
Thank you little bird, you know who you are.
