Re: Username and password from old router?
Sky's support remit is narrow and allowing official use of 3rd party routers would not fall under this remit. Should Sky allow the use of 3rd party routers then it would have to be a 'no support' basis so unless you know what you're doing it wouldn't be advisable
All Sky would offer would be the settings already on this site and a link to the router manufacturers website - that's it-------------------------------------------

Re: Username and password from old router?
I think that would actually be the best approach, those people such as myself, that choose to use a third party router, should consult a third party if they need help with it.
I'm quite happy when/if I need assistance, to plug in a pre-configured ISP supplied router to avoid wasting time going through all my router's settings with support.

Re: Username and password from old router?
I was implying that I wouldn't expect them to help me with port forwarding, USB ports on routers or what to do when the router packs up.
Yes the basic settings for routers are available on this site and I would expect those to be confirmed over the telephone or in a letter. This is what other ISPs do all the time.

Or they could make it that we didn't have to support 3rd party routers but could if we new what we were doing.

Re: Username and password from old router?
Again I would seriously not let people who 'claim' to know what they are doing anywhere near something like that.
Whilst you appear to be quite technically minded, I have dealt with over enthusiastic people who didn't & couldn't follow simple instructions. They would claim to know what they are doing and the result was a complete mess.
Sky would be liable for any incidents where a member of staff caused such problems and they would gain a poor reputation very quickly.

Re: Username and password from old router?
An issue with supporting 3rd party routers would be no matter how technically minded an agent is, the person on the other end of the phone that they are giving the instructions too may not have a clue.
There is also an issue with people who are not technically minded deciding to give it a go resulting in catastrophic failureLinks Router Stats Useful Tutorials Speed Test Check For Test Socket Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise

Re: Username and password from old router?
Don't work there so not sure if they got sacked or not.
Heard a rumour a while ago that OFCOM might start enforcing ISPs to give out the username and password.
The suspicious me wonders if that's why connections are now starting to be moved to MER.
Although i did also hear that we were going to start blocking the use of 3rd party router so it could just be for that reason.Links Router Stats Useful Tutorials Speed Test Check For Test Socket Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise
