Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
So I called Sky.
Quite clear the young lady I spoke to had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Following the old script. Asking me to turn the router off and on and 'Can I get on the internet now?'. Well, ehm, yes, but that's not the problem.....
When she suggested the router might be the cause, I gently suggested microfilters might be worth looking at first.....I've changed all the microfilters in the house now.
I also requested being moved to the Gamer Profile. She and her colleagues had no knowledge of what that was.
So, I'll see what happens tonight. Apparently she's going to call me tomorrow to see if it all settled down tonight. Also to investigate this so-called 'gamer-profile.'

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
In my opinion, I'd save the frustration of a second call with that 'advisor' and forget about waiting for that call-back. Ring back to get someone with an actual clue would be my advice.

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
Well, she hasn't rang back yet. Anyway, changing the microfilters may have done the trick - fingers crossed, it hasn't resync'd at a lower speed overnight.
Fired an email off to broadband support re:Gamer profile.

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
Anyway. Back to this old chestnut. I was put on the gamer profile and things didn't improves at all - still the same issues. I'[d forgotten that the issues started before I was put on the gamer profile.
Anyway, I asked them to take me off it. Replied pretty fast over email and now my stats are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10238 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 30.0db 17.7db
Noise Margin 10.5db 17.4db
This is way down from what I had before. I've tried to point this out to Sky once, who replied back that they checked and "I'd been taken off the gamer profile". There was some indication my line was back on training again - but there's been no improvement or sync in the last 48 hours.
EDIT : Something else i've noticed. When the router syncs - it seems to do it twice now. The amber light blinks, then faster and then goes out. About 5-10 secs later, it starts again and this time it connects. I think I've been fixed at a lower rate.

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
You'll be on 10Mbps (10240) down, 608kbps up

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
Yes, otherwise your noise margin would be lower.

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
They've done this to reduce errors it seems. Someone at ThinkBroadband suggests that my line has always underperformed, even at the 13350 sync - I don't have a master test socket and I think, the ring wire may still be attached around the house, I recall removing some of them.

Re: Why does my sync keep dropping?
As long as you remove the ring wire in the master socket, that should be sufficient.
If you had a perfect line, and these are few and far between, you could sync at 14-15Mb. You would also sync higher with another ISP like O2, who use a lower noise margin.
