      Bad Connection

My Sky connection has been pretty poor since I got it about a year ago, but over this Christmas period, it's been downright useless. Connection keeps dropping intermittently, and the phone line has become very noisy, and I noticed yesterday that when the phone line becomes VERY NOISY, that is when the connection drops off.

I've done a quick check for my stats, and got this :

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1792 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.0 db 23.0 db
Noise Margin 18.8 db 9.0 db

Now, I'm on the Max Package, so a 1M connection is really, really bad. The highest I've ever had was 6MB. I live about 1.1 km from the Exchange as well.

I rang BT about the noisy phone line, but they have told me that there is nothing wrong from my end.

Anyone have any ideas? Should I call Sky to see what they can do about it?

      Re: Bad Connection

It looks like you do have a noisy line so you need to find whether it is your internal cabling or the cabling from the exchange causing the problem.

Try disconnecting everything from the line apart from a 'phone preferably in the master (or engineer test) socket. Dial 17070 then option 2, and listen for any noise whatsoever on the line. If you have everything else disconnected and the noise is still there then you have to persevere with BT to get it fixed.

If the line is silent, as it should be, then you need to start checking your internal cabling to extensions for the source of the noise.

Christmas = Christmas lights, maybe you've moved things around or have new electrical devices near the router and cables?

It may be just a coincidence but this change could easily be down to electrical interference, Christmas lights for example can give off a huge amount of electrical noise. This can be transmitted over the power circuit and/or by close proximity i.e. too close to the router.

Last year I recall one customer had big problems then discovered his phone line run under his neighbours nice new outside Christmas lights. When they went down his connection recovered.

This may not be your problem but it is worth considering during your investigations.
