Potential Sky BB user
I am considering getting SKY BB. My next door neighbour has it and receives about 5.2 MB/s snch speed. I wondered if I would receive similar or better?
My line stats are:--
......................................Downstream__ ____Upstream
Connection Speed ..........4544 kbps.............. 448 kbps
Line Attenuation .............10.2 db ................. 18.0 db
Noise Margin ..................57.5 db ................... 31.0 db
I am about 2.79km from the exchange and DSLzone says my line is capable of 3.5mbps or above.
Unsure if above stats are correct way round but there from my Netgear 834GT router. I have achieved 4.9Mbs synch at one point but suspect Nildram, my ISP, have synched it at a lower speed. any thoughts people and apologies if this is in the wrong section.
My wiring is hard wired from BT master socket in the back of the terminal and run directly to my PC in the lounge as I am aware of resistance in extension cables.
Anyone any ideas what I should get on the up to 16MB/s service?Last edited by tomthered; 27-10-07 at 10:34 AM.

Re: Potential Sky BB user
Try pasting your figures into the speed tester,
SkyUser - ADSL2 Line Speed Checker - upto 24mb
It says 3-4mbps

Re: Potential Sky BB user
No thats straight from the Netgear router although I agree the stats do seem to be swapped, must be an error in the routers coding! If it says 3-4 mbs why would my neighbour next door be getting 5.2mbs ?
and why am i getting 4.5 mbs and have reached 4.9 mbs download?Last edited by tomthered; 27-10-07 at 11:35 AM.

Re: Potential Sky BB user
right figures are downstream attenuation 56.4 and Noise Margin 5.4. Synch speed was 5.2 Mb/s. do you think I would get same?

Re: Potential Sky BB user
you should get very similar, but i would suggest getting a filtered face plate if you have not already, most people find anything under 6db noise will give varying amounts of dropouts (also if you use telephone exstentions you could end up with very low sync)
your friend seems to be at the top end for his attLinks

Re: Potential Sky BB user
would I get any faster with any other BB provider like Be* or is that the max?
I have a permanent cable wired from the BT master socket going to my PC to another socket. Then I have a lead plugged to my router, so I think I have the best considering the 7m distance it runs. Did consider putting cat 6 wiring in but unsure if there will be a benefit?
My neighbour is always complaining of dropout on her Sky connection and she has to keep resetting the router, is that why, because the margin is 5.4 db?
Would I benefit any by putting the router right next to the BT socket and running an ethernet cable to my computer and plugging straight into it?Last edited by tomthered; 27-10-07 at 06:47 PM.
