Trouble with download speed
Some general advice required, from those more knowledgable than myself, before I vent direct to Sky.
I have had Sky max for some time now, late last year rings a bell, and up till now, things haven't been too bad. With an attenuation of 44dB Sky refused to connect me via ADSL2+ in order to maintain a stable connection. This connection was just over the 6Mb mark. All seemed well, until about 2 months ago, where every evening I had to reboot the router, as the noise margin had dropped into the 5's and nothing would work. Fair enough I thought, it is the evening.
However I have had to continually reboot the router over the last few weeks, on average every other evening, and the connection speed always drops to get back to a sensible noise margin. Now my connection is under the 5Mb mark, and so I have lost over 1Mb of connection speed, and I am not happy about it.
So before I go to Sky and ask them why, my attenuation is still 44dB, any suggestions from the kowledge base on here. If I continue like this, I'll end up with no connection at all. I thought for 44dB I should be in excess of 6Mb anyway, but Sky says not, in fact Sky says don't believe the speed checkers, personally, I don't believe Sky.
I know the noise margin drops in the evenings, but I seem to be having a cumulative thing happening. It drops the sync speed to get the noise margin, then a couple of evenings later, I have to do it again, and so lose some more of my sync speed.
I have tried the obvious, removed the ring wire, checked the filters etc, but no good. Also bear in mind that my attenuation has stayed at 44dB throughout.
Any thoughts??

Re: Trouble with download speed
Your attenuation determines the maximum sync speed. Noise will then reduce this. It would appear your line has noise.

Re: Trouble with download speed
Thanks Saturday - I know my line has noise, hence the lower than expected initial sync speed.
My question is why however is my line getting slower. As I tried to explain, my inital sync was 6.1 Mb with a NM of about 8. It worked well, no problems. Then during the evening, the NM dropped to the 6's, so I rebooted the router to get a better connection. A sync of 5.9 or so got the NM back to nearer 8. I expected the NM to then go higher during the following day, but it didn't, it stayed there, and then dropped again resulting in a further reboot, and re-sync at 5.7Mb.
This has continued over the last few weeks, such that now I am down to 4.9Mb, and last night the NM was below 7 again. I left it. I can't understand why the NM does not return to a higher level during the day, and then drop back down in the evening. All mine seems to do is keep droppping, thus requiring a reboot, and thus losing yet more connection speed. Throughout all this my attenuation has stayed at 44dB
So what to do? Sky to investigate the issues - highely unlikely. Or report a fault to BT, stating that my line appears to be getting more noise on it on a daily basis.
Cheers

Re: Trouble with download speed
Could try posting your detailed stats see if we can spot anything. Also check uPNP is switched off.
Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4
Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
Enter the router login user name and password.
At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

Re: Trouble with download speed
Have you tried your test socket to check it's not noise that's being introduced locally?

What to do with all these errors. A month ago I was on 6.1 Mb with the same attenuation, and the same noise margin. Is this a BT thing. I am plugged in to the master socket, will try the test socket.

Re: Trouble with download speed
I have just tested in the test socket, and connected at 6144 kbps with a noise margin of 10.9. I have now reconnected everything back as it was, and have a connection of 6144 kbps and a noise margin of 10.8. All I need now is for Sky to remove the cap they have put on the line, and see how fast we can go. I also checked some other sockets around the house, and removed ring wires where I found them.
Here's hoping its fixed.

More stats after the fix. SNR has stayed at 10.1 and above all evening, and the log below shows considerably less errors. I know its only been a short while, but looks good so far.

Re: Trouble with download speed
Hi,
I have been having a similar type of problem.
I have had my connection for about 6 months now and have nevr been happy with it
I thought i had cracked it when i removed the BT face plate and plugged direct into the test socket , got a connection of aroun6.2 which i was well happy with considering i am 2.4km away from the exchange and have a line attenuation of 50db
However whenever i leave the computer for a little time i come back only to find it has dropped to 1000kbps or even 100kbps with the attenuation still at 50db but a very high noise margin of around 24 or something
This has got worse recently and i am really frustrated!!
Any ideas ?
stats are below!
cheers,
