      New Sky Fibre Help

      Hi everyone,

I had Sky Fibre Max Unlimited installed over 2 weeks ago.

Wired to my laptop, I'm getting the full 60mb speeds. However, WiFi is a different story. I get about 30mb, and that's in the next room! Sometimes it'll be higher, sometimes even lower. Signal wise on my devices, I'm getting almost full signal, so I would have expected the speed to reflect this, not be more than halfed.

Have tried changing the channels and even moving the router, it's just not strong enough to get the signal through my walls. YouTube even buffers upstairs at times.

Is there anything else I can try? If not, I was looking at the Asus RT-AC51U on Amazon. Only 38 and has good reviews, but can I use this? I heard there is a way to get your sky login info, but unsure how.

      Thanks in advance.

It really depends on the type of walls you have. I have solid brick walls everywhere, hence then need for three wifi AP's.

None of of the supplied Sky routers have ever had good wifi, but if you choose the Asus you will need to either flash it with third party firmware or, if it supports it, there is a command line option you can use on certain Asus routers that enables the option61 negotiation needed.

Another alternative is to use powerline adaptors with wifi, something like this:

      https://www.amazon.co.uk/TL-WPA4530K...powerline+wifi

That's how my system works, but I use Develos, they cost more but I have found them to be more reliable.

      Re: New Sky Fibre Help

I assume Sky have supplied an ER110 or ER115 router. The issue with these routers is they try force any non-Sky Q devices to use the 2.4GHz band which will be why you are only seeing around 30 Mbps. The 2.4GHz band will top out at a theoretical max of 36 Mbps.

You need to split the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz SSID so that you can get your devices to connect to the 5GHZ band. To do this:
      1. Connect to the router
      2. Select the Wireless tab and log in (user: admin password: sky)
      3. On both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz tabs, uncheck the "Synchronise 2.4GHz and 5GHz Settings"
      3. On the 5GHz tab, add something like _5GHZ to the SSID.
      4. Click Apply and it's all done.

Your 5GHz capable devices should now see the 5GHz band as a separate SSID, connect to that and you should get wifi downloads approaching that of your connection speed.

I tried that. Didn't make any difference at all...
