Re: Wired connection - Slower than expected.

Whilst reviewing this 255.255.255.255 and defroute 0.0.0.0 I found the following, and now it makes sense.

The 255.255.255.255 is what a PPP (VPN or dialup) client should get. A high values mask (all hex FF) such as this, just means that this is the IP on this only network, which means it is a one-to-one, or also known as a point-to-point connection across a secure channel between the client and VPN server, and not a point to network or network to network connection. It's not a A VPN connection is a point-to-point connection, and it's not the same thing as a LAN interface. The subnet mask has no meaning really for a PPP client. The gateway may show up as blank or the same as the PPP IP address, (not 0.0.0.0) depending on what the client operating system version is. The gateway really has no meaning because the end points are the PPP client and the PPP (VPN) server.

Way off topic but whilst we are waiting for the outcome of the chat with Sky support....

      Thanks marjohn56.

I won't pretend to fully understand all of that.
Are we saying that despite what the router reports, 2.127.238.127 isn't really my hop 2 gateway?

Either way, i'm intrigued as to why i get no ping response from it but the tool here does.

When have that loaded, what IP does it show? When I load it it shows my WAN IP ( Sky psuedo static ).

It shows my ip but you can put any address in.

A reverse trace successfully reaches 2.127.238.127 too but that address doesn't show up in a reverse trace to my ip.
Same story with this similar site.

Tracert on mine also skips the def gate too or times out. Probably because the def-gate does not respond to ICMP packets.

But you can ping your gateway though?
That's what started this thread diversion - the fact that you can but most folks on sky can't.

That's from this site but my own pings to 2.127.238.127 time out & according to my router it's my gateway.

Re: Wired connection - Slower than expected.

I've done another traceroute to skyuser using the tools available on my router and get the same list of hosts as a traceroute (mtr) from my desktop PC so the unknown host (? ? ?) is not my home router which strangely is completely ignored when running a trace from my desktop. This suggests (to me at least) that my router is forwarding an ICMP echo request with a TTL of one instead of decrementing it and returning an error.

Re: Wired connection - Slower than expected.

and I have a fibre pro connection...

I also set my LAN a bit differently to most. My dhcp server lives on a separate machine and so does my primary DNS. I use my router purely as a gateway and firewall.
