From 70Mbps to barely 1Mbps, with wireless being faster than wired. Help??
So a few days ago my speed started being unbearably slow after being great for months, even though seemingly nothing has changed.
To remedy this, I've tried new ethernet cables, a new Network Interface Card for my PC, new Homeplugs, all without any success. I've also tried rebooting the router several times. Today I phoned Sky Support and despite being fairly friendly, I didn't get much help.
It also baffles me why wireless would be faster than wired. Did an animal chew through the cables in my wall or something?
Today, while accessing the router's settings page, I noticed it looked different and then I saw that the firmware had been updated to 3.45.1133.R. Could this be behind my problem? I asked the support guy about it and he said probably not since firmware tends to only fix security stuff and not network things. But I have no idea what else it could be.
Does anyone have any advice or help?

Is your speed still slow if you connect direct to the router rather than through homeplugs? There have been reports of some homeplugs not performing well with fibre

I would guess that the homeplugs are the problem. Disconnect them and try another speed test.

Is it possible that a neighbour has installed their own HomePlugs and that these are interfering with yours?

Re: From 70Mbps to barely 1Mbps, with wireless being faster than wired. Help??
It shouldn't, but I was trying to think what might be causing the change in the performance.
Basically my thinking is that something has started to cause some interference. The potential list is much longer and would include possible faulty electrical equipment, a wiring issue or something else.
OF course, just like with WiFi, the HomePlugs use a specific frequency to transmit the data. Whilst the difference is that HomePlugs send over the electrical wires, if you are using some that work at one speed and your neighbour is using some that work at a different speed but on the same channel, or that they are using them a lot, then they could affect the performance of yours.

Easiest way to find out is to ask your neighbour(s). But if removing them makes no difference, I can't see that being a problem.
Have you tried resetting your router? Hold in the reset button on the rear for at least 10seconds and see if that helps. Remember you will loose all your settings, so back them up somewhere before you do it.
