      Re: Weird ping graph

I have noticed my broadband monitor showing a similar thing recently.

I have noticed our hd boxes regularly start up the hard drive even when on standby so I put this down to either push on demand content or the boxes setting themselves up for future downloads.

I haven't checked to see if the times the boxes spin up coincides with the spikes on the monitor though.

Ahh, well i don't have sky boxs (anymore) or anything on in my house when i'm out a part from the router of course

      yet the spikes still occur.

i will try a different graph (mouselike) maybe it will show different.

My STB does not cause this, I just have the unknown sawtooth effect. I'm sure someone around here could explain though.

      Re: Weird ping graph

The periodical spikes appear to be common across the Sky Broadband network with many of us. Below is the latest graph from my own connection.

According to the BQM FAQ, the regular spikes that marjohn56 is seeing could be an indication that the router is performing some regular housekeeping. If it isn't the router, it could be something else connected.

Further down the page is another example of a sawtooth profile which TB puts down to something only seen on Sky LLU connections.

If you are using a non-Sky router, check the settings and ensure that you are using an up to date firmware. If you are using the Sky router, then there isn't a great deal you can do.

Thanks for the info Scubbie, I've got to admit I never let it bother me as I have seen no adverse affects.

      Re: Weird ping graph

I have had some strangeness going on. As you can see I am using another modem/router combo. Last week ( Tuesday or Wednesday ) the nice OR man came along and found a problem on my back box, and reset the DLM. Sync was initially 67Mbps with and showing some errors. Overnight ( that night ) the DLM intervened and dropped me to 61Mbps, btw, this is using the OR modem, sky router and my old Asus. Error count dropped to nothing all clean and dandy.

On Friday I decided to try my Draytek again, plugged it in, 61Mbps all good.

On Tuesday morning the DLM intervened again, this time it removed interleave and my sync rate shot up to 68Mbps plus!

I am seeing some error seconds and CRC errors, CRC errors only on upstream though. The link is stable, no drops and faster than ever.

Why? Who knows the secret of the OR Magic Box.. ( Should of been Black Magic but it makes no sense )

      Re: Weird ping graph

I've always had a 'twin peak' spike on my graph almost every 4-5 hours.
      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-b...ph-normal.html
(Thread makes little sense now the graphs aren't there).
They're practicality identical to the sawtooth ones shown on the tbb site, only with 5 hour gaps rather than constant.

Two days ago at 8pm i removed the ethernet cable from my sky box & just like when i did that before, the spikes have stopped.

I have done ping tests during these spikes on many occasions & the results are always normal, so i'm not really concerned.
Would be nice to know what the cause is though.

      Re: Weird ping graph

Following on from the previous post, here's a perfect example:

This is how my graph as been for the past few days since i pulled the ethernet cable from the sky box.
It shows just my own usage using a ps3, which is the only other device connected.

I plugged the ethernet cable back in the sky box this morning at 10am & low & behold, just after 2pm there it is - the twin peak which will continue to occur approximately every 4 hours 45 minutes.

These twin peaks are always identical unless of course my own usage overlaps, but they'll still be detectable.
In the past they would appear on the graph without fail, but what i've noticed recently is that the one in the early hours is usually skipped.
This recent trend of the early one missing started around the same time my box updated to R010 but can't be certain they're connected.
