      Fibre connection slowdown

      Hi there,

Long-time Sky broadband user - and a massive advocate of their service, too. I've used them since about 2008 and this is only the second problem I've ever had.

But (!), it would be nice to know if anyone else is experiencing a significant slowdown today. I'm in SW6 (Parsons Green exchange) and am getting 2Mb/s instead of the usual 38-40Mb/s. Sky's service status page says all is well.

      Anyone else noticed problems?

      Thanks

      Will

      No worries.

Any idea where the interference came from?

P.S. Could you update your profile please. I was thinking that 38-40mb on an ADSL connection would be a new service

Congestion in the 2.4Ghz range. Too many people nearby; my router said the throughput was 2.4Mb/s and interference was severe - which was useful. Changed channel and all is well, for now. But it's a right problem for cities when most flats/houses have their own wifi router, broadcasting signal and noise all over the place.

      Re: Fibre connection slowdown

Yes many areas will have issues with the high number of WiFi routers nearby.

If your computer's adaptor supports it, you may wish to look into getting a router or WiFi extender that supports the 5GHz band. The signal doesn't travel as far, but there are more channels available and most will support faster speeds than Sky's router does.

Many new smart phones and tablets support the 5GHz band already.

Thanks. Yes, my router has both, but my laptop only supports 2.4.

      Re: Fibre connection slowdown

Sorry, I missed the fact that you aren't using the Sky router.

As a suggestion then, look into getting a new WiFi adaptor for your laptop. Some are easier than others to change, so do check first.
