Fluctuating speeds and ping on new fibre connection

Hey guys, just had fibre installed the other day and so far I'm not too impressed. We had a rock solid 17mbit on ADSL and it was great. Unfortunately with fibre we're having fluctuating speeds between 20-30mbit and ping seems to range from 15-60ms.

It was a "self" install, meaning that we didn't get a new faceplate or anything. We actually have the router plugged in to an extension, which is literally the other side of the wall of the master, so about 6 inches of cable. I have tried it in the master socket and to be honest the results are much the same.

I have tried speed tests over a wired connection at various times of the day and find it erratic. I have also tried downloading some large files from our servers at work which usually max out any connection and I seem to get about 2.5-3 MB/s average.

The phone line doesn't have any noticeable crackling either. Any ideas on what I can do? I know its only been 3 days so Sky probably wouldn't do anything yet. Also here are my stats:

      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 39994 kbps 9999 kbps
Line Attenuation 14.4 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 23.8 dB 24.24 dB

Your stats could not be any better. Perhaps its another congested exchange problem. These seem to pop up when Fibre's enabled.

Just rang sky and had the usual reset your router BS.

Guess I'll have to ring again and try to get it escalated!

Hopefully it will give you an insight into where the problem lays.

Hope you get it sorted soon!

Well looking at the graph there isn't anything obvious, gah!

Re: Fluctuating speeds and ping on new fibre connection

I would let it run a couple more days first. At present, I wouldn't put it down to a congested exchange. It could possibly be a faulty hub, but you'll probably have to wait the 10 days that fibre providers like you to wait before looking into a possible problem.

Other than that, I can't think of anything obvious that would be affecting your connection. As Tom has said, your stats are great.

Re: Fluctuating speeds and ping on new fibre connection

Yeah I think I might just leave it awhile to see what happens. Interestingly on the graph the ping has dropped significantly at 8AM and seems to be staying in that range.

I guess DLM and BT might be working on things. To be honest the cabinet has only just been activated and I had fibre fitted a few days after. So chances are they are still sorting things out, I'm probably the first on the cab :P

Re: Fluctuating speeds and ping on new fibre connection

Well I'm happy to report that things seem good this evening. Nice low pings and high speeds across all of the speed testers and stuff.

I guess things just needed to "settle" so to speak. Theres me getting paranoid :P

I will keep an eye on things over the next few days
