      SR102 Alternatives?

      Hi Guys!

I am currently on Sky Fibre Pro and I am disgusted with the speeds that I am getting from the SR102 and I am wondering what are the best alternatives.
I am currently getting 40-45 when I pay for 76.

Help would be appreciated as this is my first post to this forum

Another modem/router is unlikely to make much difference to your broadband speed, although it can make a very big difference to your internal network. If you are thinking about a new router to increase your internet speed, I wouldn't bother, any difference would be negligible. What estimate were you given when you took fibre? Remember, like ADSL you pay for up to a given speed, the actual speed you get depends on your distance from the cabinet in the case of fibre and the exchange with ADSL.

There are several threads on the forum discussing what routers can be used to connect to fibre, either through a modem or direct. There are not many that can connect direct to fibre, but there are many which can connect through a BTO modem.

      Re: SR102 Alternatives?

If your speed is so much lower than the estimate you should get on to Sky and complain. If they are unable to give you a better speed they should allow you to downgrade with no penalty. In most cases users get a better speed than the estimate they are given as Sky like to keep on the safe side. But in saying that they often give too wide an estimate eg, 40-65 mb, which is really meaningless.

What does your router report your getting? I found that im getting more than Sky said i would but the wifi speed is crap for some reason even when im next to it with a N rated device and its the only one connected. Also connected direct to the router with ethernet im getting nearly the speed the router reports but through powerline adaptors it knocks around a third off of the speed (interference?)

I sync at 70mbps but top out at about 45 over WiFi on a good day. Important stuff is cabled to the router and goes at the full rated speed. I'd avoid HomePlugs, the interference put a big dent in the VDSL speed for me.

That's probably the best you will get out of Wifi with the SR102. What homeplugs did you use because I'm using some Solwise AV500's and there is barely any drop in speed and one of them is right next to my router. A rule of thumb is take the speed the device is connecting to wifi at and halve it because the router can only transmit or receive not both at the same time.

      Re: SR102 Alternatives?

Wifi can be your problem when its comes to overheads and digital phones near sky router etc, these type of factors can affect your wifi, not only that wifi compared to hard wired is a big difference..

Have you tried changing the channel on your router instead of set to auto?
