Fibre unlimited to Pro - how much better?

Just had Fibre pro installed. Before I ordered Sky rep told me I would be 'guaranteed' 40Mb but 42Mb was the max that my line could handle so there was no point in getting Pro for the extra 2Mb.

Bit strange because BT told me I could get 65Mb.

Get the feeling the rep has been somewhat economical with the truth especially with the guarantees. Had it a few days and I know its got to calm down a bit but we're at 28Mbps now.

Question is - If I upgrade to Pro (80Mbps) how does it work? It is like having two channels instead of one or does the fact that Im only getting 28Mbps now mean thats the most my line is ever going to be capable of?

From your perspective there should be no difference.

VDSL is the technology used by FTTC which Sky Fibre uses for SFU and SFUP. It uses a wider signal spectrum than ADSL2+, but SFU is capped at 40mb.

If you do not already have a VDSL filtered faceplate, then I would definitely recommend that you get one before you upgrade to SFUP.

If you do upgrade to SFUP then the update will normally go through overnight, although you will be advised that it an take a few days.

BT say I can get 55Mbps but sky say I can only get 33Mbps and Pro isn't available even though i have had it before. Sky's systems are wrong.

O think I will be going to BT in the summer.

Right so it might be better for SFUP?

Like I said I've got a pre-filtered faceplate from ADSL days. Is this different to the VDSL filtered one then?

What about the microfilters that came in the box? I assumed they were just standard ADSL ones or are they VDSL specific?

I got the feeling with Sky they didnt really want to sell me Pro for some reason and, thus, deliberately underestimated the max speed.

For whatever reason I dont know?

Re: Fibre unlimited to Pro - how much better?

If the BT Infinity site is providing an estimate of 55mb I would expect 65mb provided that your cabinet isn't too busy. However do expect that speed to drop as more Fibre customers are added.

The VDSL filtered faceplate has a better filter than the ADSL filtered faceplates. The range of frequencies it covers is better and even on ADSL connections it works better. Will it be any better in your specific case? Personally I hid my ADSL filtered faceplate before the BTO Engineer arrived and let him fit the VDSL faceplate. Sadly with self-install you won't see the BTO Engineer, but I would still recommend the VDSL faceplate.

The microfilters supplied with the SR102 are supposed to be rated for VDSL. I have never tried them, but having read about the number of problems before with ADSL microfilters, I would not recommend microfilters if the person is willing to fit a filtered faceplate.

Edit: Just seen your responses on the thread with run-IT-direct

Yeh. Bought a VDSL faceplate now. See how that goes.
