      Fibre Pro Slow over wireless

Hi everyone, new member and needed some help really.

Been on the phone for over an hour with a helpful gentleman from Sky Tech support regarding my newly installed Fibre Pro service. It was installed on 6th December.

So basically issue is over ethernet I am getting atleast 75Mb however over wireless a mere aprox 30Mb at its best:

So I've done the check on the Hub itself with the following results:

      Router Statistics

      System Up Time: 02:58:15
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time
      WAN MER 8129231 13737181 0 7647 12223 02:55:05
      LAN Up 142378 95642 0 870 409 02:58:15
      WLAN Up 371557 259938 0 415016 26329 02:53:01

      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 79987 kbps 19999 kbps
Line Attenuation 10.3 dB 0.0 dB
Noise Margin 27.2 dB 23.23 dB

I have gone through all the channels and tried the ones not being used in my area, settled with Sky's recommendation of 5 as this provided the best result possible.

I moved the Hub to a bed which has no electrical devices at all in or surrounding rooms, but I still get the slow speeds.

I have updated the drivers on my laptop which has a Broadcom 802.11n Adaptor, and also tried a TP-Link Wireless N Nano Receiver both with similar results.

Sky suspected that the Hub was faulty and he was about to send me a new until, until I disabled WIFI broadcast on the Hub, connected a D-Link DIR615 N300 router and used this as the access point, again connection via ethernet was perfect (75+Mb) but over wireless it was only aprox 30Mb, which showed clearly that nothing was wrong with the WIFI on the Hub?

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?

Even if I can get 45Mb+ wirelessly, that will do as my PS3, PS4, and Sky+ HD Box are all connected via Ethernet so should attain full speeds.

      Thanks in advance.

If you are getting a 'mere' 30Mb with wireless you are doing pretty well. To guarantee more you would need to get yourself a more powerful router, one complying with Wireless AC and a compatible adapter. It has been fairly well publicised that the Sky hub is not up to much when it comes to wireless speeds. Here is a couple of reviews for the SR101 which is identical wireless-wise, to the SR102-

There are more, but they just make more depressing reading.

I hate wireless with a passion. It's rubbish. I only use it because I have to!

(PC's/server/network infrastructure is all cabled of course!!)

Re: Fibre Pro Slow over wireless

During testing with the SR101 I did manage to achieve 80mb/s over WiFi for local traffic. At the time I didn't have Fibre broadband so couldn't check that speed then.

I would have expected the SR102 to be slightly better on the WiFi though, but am disappointed to read about your issues.

Currently for other reasons, which I believe have been addressed with the SR102, I am not using the SR101 to control my network. I have the following setup:

      BTO Modem -> SR101 -> WNDR3800

This gives me a 1Gbit LAN, dual band 300mb WiFi and various other tools which are not available on the SR101.

Re: Fibre Pro Slow over wireless

The Sky router is a piece of crap and it's high time they took steps to rectify it. Pardon my french.

The highest speed it supports is 144Mbps.

Here's a screenshot from around my area. You can see the max speeds from the Sky routers:

The only option for you if you want better speeds is to get a better router. You can get really nice TP-Link routers from Amazon for around 30 - 50 which will give you way better performance over wi-fi.

Just as an example... I have the Asus N-66U and this is my speed over wifi on Sky 40/10.

      Hope this helps

Edit: Forgot to mention... do check the link speed your network card can support too. Maybe the problem lies with your computer?

Thanks for the replies, I have used a D-Link DIR615 N300 router and same results, I would of thought the D-Link would have been better?

This is the result I get with my WNDR3800:

Do remember to use either Namesco or Structured Communications in London. These have been verified as having sufficient bandwidth to cope with Fibre speeds.

Is there anyway for you to check your link speed? So we can know at what speed your computer and router are talking at.

For macs, just Option + Click on the wifi icon. It'll show up as something like this (transmit speed in Mbps):

For windows it might be in the network settings.

      That might provide some hint.

Edit: Also, channel 5 is not a good channel per se. You need either 1 , 6 or 11 over 2.4ghz. Try using inssider for windows to see the channels around you and then settle on the least congested. Just checked and the DIR615 doesn't have 5Ghz so that's a no-go.

Re: Fibre Pro Slow over wireless

its a Broadcom 802.11n Adaptor and says 72Mbps, not sure if this is the current speed or the max speed of the adaptor?
