Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?

I recently cancelled my SKY TV after being with them for over 10 years. Suddenly I noticed a big drop in my download speed!

I am on Sky unlimited Pro paying a substantial amount for only a 50MB line, usually the speed checker gets me to around 52-54MB download. Probably worth paying an extra 10 pm for

After cancelling my TV I now cannot even get any more then 40MB! That's the same as the unlimited package!

My dynamic IP is exactly the same so I guess it didn't fall off one weekend. Is SKY deliberately reducing my broadband because I cancelled their TV!

      What can I do?

This has just happened to me, exactly. Escalated it to a BTO visit and my profile had changed. Openview changed it back and it lasted for one evening, back to 20 MBs lost and ping more than doubled. Thought I was being paranoid but then you come up with this........was there a man on the 'Grassy Knoll'? Anyone else?

Re: Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?

So I spoke with Sky at length this morning. They ran through their usual checks and also advised me that my maximum speed will be dropping as my connecting cannot apparently hold more then a 40MB connection.

WTF, I am paying for a Pro line which the BT engineers said can handle 70MB easily. But according to Sky their estimates now say I won't be able to get a steady connection for more then 40MB. Why then am I paying 10 extra a month!

Is this because more and more people are turning to Fibre or is it because Sky is dropping non-sky tv users!

I feel like cancelling my contract all together and moving to BT!

That's it in a nutshell. The more people using your fibre cabinet the greater the cross-talk which reduces your speed.
Why then am I paying 10 extra a month!
Call Sky and ask them to reduce your package to the standard Fibre package as you do not get the speed to merit Pro. They should do this as they will not upgrade anyone to Pro who can't get over the Standard speed.

I feel like cancelling my contract all together and moving to BT!
Have you tried to get a speed estimate from elsewhere? You might find you would be no better off.

Re: Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?

Thanks this is very good advice,

Just checked BT infinity, they estimate the following.

Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?-screen-shot-2013-12-08-17.48.39.jpg

Sky have told me my line can only manage 40MB,

This confirms what the BT engineers told me while fitting my line, I think I will cancel Sky and move to BT!

If Sky are unable or unwilling to give you the speed your line can handle, that is probably the only option, especially if they continue to charge you Pro rate..

I'd check the BT Wholesale checker.

However, if you are only getting 40MB on your current setup, I doubt BT would be any faster.

It's not like you'd be plugged into a different cabinet!!

I also checked the BT wholesale checker, it confirmed what BT estimated for me at 68.1.

I have no idea why Sky have dropped my speed, On my street nearly everyone is on Sky or Sky fibre, maybe that is what causing the speed drop!

Re: Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?

Just a daft point, but one worth making...

BT Retail will be using the same cable between your home and the cabinet, which determines your connection speed.

If they were able to get BTO to improve your connection speed, where BTO has failed to do so for Sky, then this IMHO is a criminal act as it is against Ofcom's rules for BTO to favour BT Retail in this manner over the competitors.

Since you have such a gap in the estimated connection speed to what you actually have, I can only assume that there is indeed an issue with the copper cable between your home and the fibre cabinet or there is something within your home which is causing the problem. Both should be easily fixed by a competent BTO Engineer, provided that the copper cable can be replaced if required.

We have had examples on this forum where BTO has refused to replace under copper cables. We have also had one where after years of issues, the cause of the problem was finally identified as the contacts on top of the telegraph pole which wasn't correctly sealed against the weather.

Re: Is Sky reducing my Sky Fibre Download speed?

You could try getting an estimate from Sky again. Just use your post code and see what they come up with.
