Why does my download speed decrease when doing speedtest

i don't understand what is wrong with my connection. so i explain as much as i can.

i been keeping a eye my speeds and pings the last couple of weeks as it not performing how it should be.
i had fibre for over a year now when i used to speed test on speedtest.net i would always get solid download speeds of around 38mb from various servers.

but now when i do test for example to a local server the speed test will seem to start fine and hit around 36 - 38mb then gradually drop to around 32mb.
for servers further away like Germany im getting like 30 mb or lower before i used to get 38mb no problem on Europe servers.

usa servers i get below 12mb im sure i used to get full speed from there also.

my upload speeds are always solid 8-9mb to all servers so no problem there its just my downloads.

also my pings are higher then they used to be.

for the last week or so my ping test to bbc were 23ms tested every day then yesterday i noticed it went down to 14ms which i thought good my connection is nearly back to what it should be so i tested fifa 14 and my first game i played was perfect no lag stutters and this was vs a player from the usa then every game after that the lag is back (stutters every now and then) every game even to uk players.

now i checked my pings today and its gone back up to 23ms to bbc.

anyone got any ideas whats wrong so i can get it fixed.

Re: Why does my download speed decrease when doing speedtest

Is your speed slower or is it just your speed test results?

To test your actual speed you should download several large files from known high speed servers or use something like Steam and add others if this isn't maxing your connection.
My nephew got 14+MB/sec (Megabytes NOT Megabits!) from Steam the other day on his Virgin 120Mb connection so it should do fine to test your limits.

Speed test sites don't download big files, most download small files and estimate speeds from those download times.
If lots of people are doing these tests at the same time on high speed connections then you could just be seeing the server being overloaded.

This (above) is the only reliable way to test your actual speed.
