Are Sky limiting my usage after heavy downloading?

      Hey guys,

Yesterday I downloaded a 13 GB torrent which took full use of my 38 meg speed, downloading at a steady 4.2 Mb/sec. Today however I've noticed a slowdown in general when using the internet, YouTube for example is buffering a lot and downloads are coming in at 400kb/sec.

I am connected directly through Ethernet. I've logged into the Sky Router page and its showing a downlink of 39998kbps. This is the first time I've noticed such a slow down. Have Sky started capping heavy downloaders or is this something on my end that's at fault?

      Many Thanks

Run a speedtest, which should show if there's a huge problem or not Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Alternatively, search for a huge test file to download which should also give a good indication, it may just the a coincidence that the servers you are using are slow at the moment.

I would be inclined to check other things first. Although things are constantly changing, Sky would be in breach of their advertising if they started slowing people down now.

Generally the issues are with the seeding source, too many open connections on the torrent software or some other activity happening at the same time.

Thanks guys, I think I solved the problem. Bizarrely, it was clearing out my browser history which did it. Everything feels back to normal now

Skys 'google services' servers are screwed and have been for months as far as I can tell.

Thats why youtube can be awful at times.

Re: Are Sky limiting my usage after heavy downloading?

Don't forget iOS 7 just came out and many providers saw a large surge in traffic over the past couple days due to the sheer number of people downloading the new update.

Depending on how much headroom sky had on their Backhaul links it's possible some areas might have seen congestion due to the traffic spike.

I've pulled down between 400GB and 1TB a month and never been slowed down
