I had forgoten that too and the conclusion seemed to be that 1500 was the default and correct setting. It seems that conclusion may have been wrong or do different lines perform in a different way?

Even on my ADSL2+ Sky LLU connection 1492 was the optimal MTU.

PPPoE connections should run an MTU of 1500. Both fibre and ADSL are PPPoA - which has an optimal MTU of 1492 bytes. Fragmented bytes mean 2 packets required to transfer 1 piece of data. MTU should always be the maximum amount of bytes without causing fragmentation.

This is very basic networking knowledge, if you ask me. Because Sky engineers set that as the default MTU, does not make it the most optimal.

I am wondering if because the router I am using is linked through the Sky Hub, which in turn is connected to the BTO Modem, that my MTU differs.

An interesting read, but that looks like Cisco iOS dialler configuration. I'm afraid that most consumer modems are not quite as sophisticated. Definitely not the SR102.

Scubbie, yes, I believe you are right. As far as I'm aware, I believe the BTO modem uses an RJ45 connection?

Right. I didn't get the Cisco iOS dialler config reference, but I thought they were interesting because (brief as they are) they seem to be of the opinion that an MTU of 1500 is not necessarily bad on fibre. But perhaps I'm reading too much into it. I'm gazing at my coat (in case I need to get it... )

Interesting point here too about being able to connect direct to the modem through your PC.
      1. Control panel, Network and Internet
      2. Click Network Sharing Centre
      3. Click Setup a connection or network
      4. Follow the wizard
      5. You should be online, you may want to check firewall settings
Any of our fibre users prepared to try it? If you are make sure your Firewall is enabled on the PC.

Hi Tom, I may be wrong but I don't think that works to get online if you're on Sky & TalkTalk, but it does work to get online if you're on BT Infinity & other ISPs who resell the BT Wholesale product.

Yes, I had forgotten about the extra requirements to connect to Sky.
