There's probably no reason it couldn't have one however, I suspect the hardware would be perfectly capable it would just need the feature adding to the firmware.

All of the reasons mentioned are why I did not the AIO unit (even though they did not offer me, sort of stuffed it in my face!). I'd be much more comfortable with an Openreach engineer performing the install, checking the synch speeds and performing line tests. That way, I know the connection is going to work as good as every other FTTC connection deployed thus far.

If there were some sort of payment for the trial, I'd probably have done it. But to charge me full whack + activation fee... Sky can do one in that respect.

An Openreach engineer visit is the perfect opportunity to get any wiring issues sorted out at the same time as the master socket is being upgraded (subject to getting an OR engineer who knows what (s)he is doing of course!)

When self-install comes along, I forsee a surge of posts from people seeing degraded performance because of poor wiring and/or VDSL micro-filters incorrectly installed in inappropriate places! I expect the same thing happened when ADSL went self-install all those years ago...

This came through the post today. For God's sake - I have to phone them again to question this. I do NOT want this damn AIO box! This means I have to buy a faceplate...

Posting pictures for anyone curious about what this looks like. Will definitely be getting on the phone to them, though. Will update again shortly.

      Re: Sky Fibre install diary

      Indeed.

According to Sky, however, the filters are not going to be used and Openreach will still install their VDSL faceplate - I will just have to use the Sky router or "hub" as they like to call it.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to find a new way of getting my gigabit LAN going.

      Re: Sky Fibre install diary

Just a quick note: The router is called 'Sky Hub SR102'.

BT have had a HomeHub range for several years. Again they are just a router. VM produced a product which they called the 'Super Hub'. Again it is just another router.

BT have since gone on to produce HomeHub v2, v3, v4 and now v5. VM have released their 2nd Super Hub. This is Sky's 2nd product with 'Hub' in the title.

All of them are routers. Before someone jumps in and points out USB ports, telephone sockets, etc., sure Sky's SR101 and SR102 do not have either. However there are a varity of router from the major manufacturers of routers (D-Link, Netgear, Billion, etc.) which have USB ports, internal hard drives and more. These are called routers in the title.

Sky are IMHO just joining the bandwagen and using 'Hub' in their title just like BT & VM who have been getting away with it for a bit longer.

I'm the lucky man then ;-) . I've received my Sky hub last Friday and it is a SR101.
OR installation is scheduled this Wednesday. I'm so happy to have separate VDSL modem.
Looks like I was probably one of the last customers with separate VDSL modem and router.
I hope I still be lucky and OR engineer will be full professional. Will see.

I should point out that the SR102 will work perfectly well connected to a BT Modem through an ethernet port, exactly the same as the SR101. You can pick up a BT Modem fairly cheaply on eBay, which, after extracting your details from the Hub, means you can still use your own router if you wish.
